Our new article 'Keeping Warm at Sea' is out today

"The outer layer is all about keeping the outside moisture out and getting the inside moisture out also. The body is always producing moisture and a simple plastic jacket will not allow this to escape - meaning you get damp anyway. There are sophisticated fabrics out there that will do both: keep the water out and let the moisture out. The most well known of these is Gortex, but other materials such as Dremtech, Polartec, Hy-vent and Pertex are equally viable alternatives. See our info box on how these fabrics work. Whichever you choose, this should always form your outer layer if it is a wet or rainy environment. This is where you need the fancy technical stuff!"
