February has been a busy month for our Foundation. This week, we rolled out our second set of SMART sessions at Anaheim HS. Hundreds of students are now learning the symptoms of stroke and how to prevent them from happening. Earlier today, we went into Norwalk and gave a successful stroke awareness seminar to local residents. Don't miss out on our next two seminars coming up next week. Check our Calendar and sign up today!

This month is National Family Caregivers Month. In our line of work, we often see that stroke can have just as detrimental of an affect on the family of the survivor, as they are often left to cope with medical challenges and psychological changes in their loved ones. Throughout the years of our service, we've been honored to meet the courageous family members and friends of stroke survivors and we encourage them to continue their invaluable service and care to help their loved ones get better.

Today is the World Stroke Day, and we jumped on it a bit early with a large Seminar yesterday in Downey delivered by superstar neurologist Dr. Chui. We educated and screened around 200 people as well. Doing our best to reduce stroke in the community! To all our friends: If any day today is the day to get the FAST tool memorized as it is the easiest way of recognizing a stroke and saving a stroke sufferer's life, as 80% of strokes are preventable, and most of them are survivable if treatment is delivered on time. Knowing FAST can expedite emergency services so clot-busting drugs and tools can be delivered to the sufferer.
FAST:
Face: Does one side of the face droop, is the face uneven?
Arm: Can the person lift both arms, can they walk and use both legs?
Speech: Is the person's speech slurred, are the words unintelligible?
Time: Yes to any of the above symptoms? Call 911, every minute counts with stroke
Knowing fast, along with eating a more balanced diet coupled with regular exercise, has worked in tandem to reduce stroke as the number 4 killer to the number 5 killer in the U.S. But unfortunately, stroke remains the number 2 cause of death worldwide. Share this post, talk to your friends and family, spread knowledge about FAST and help to reduce the prevalence of stroke.

With flu season revving up, we'd like to share an article with everyone that details the relationship between stroke and flu, particularly in children. Although stroke is still relatively rare among the under 18 demographic, a recent study published in the article found that children who had suffered the flu or an infection were around 18% more likely to experience a stroke in the week following their infection. The medical professionals that conducted the study have speculated that the startling findings are a result of inflammation building clots during the period of infection that then travel to the brain and produce ischemic strokes. With the flu season fast approaching, it's good to note the symptoms of stroke particular to children:
Sudden:
Dizziness
Sleepiness
Severe headache
Vomiting
Mood or behavioral changes
Difficulty with schoolwork
Seizures
While a single one of these symptoms doesn't necessarily indicate a stroke, several symptoms experienced together, suddenly, may be cause for concern especially post-flu or infection.
For further information on the study, please see the article below.

Yesterday Saint Jude and the RTH Stroke Foundation teamed to clobber stroke with a large, 200 plus attendee Stroke Awareness Seminar in Yorba Linda. We hope the Seminar along with the screenings will be enough to offset a multitude of potential strokes from occurring in this area.
