Renaissance Restorations, Inc. performs historic restorations throughout Detroit historic neighborhoods: Indian Village, Palmer Woods, Sherwood Forest, University District, Boston-Edison, Woodbridge, Grosse Pointe Communities, and Rosedale Park. The major difference between a historic home and any other neighborhood home can be boiled down to the simple evolution of restoration vs. renovation. In a historic home the goal is simple…preservation. Preserve the dwelling the way it was built. In any other neighborhood home design evolution is free to take its course and change with the times and fads.

Many homeowners can attest to the vestiges of “modern” eras gone by and have purchased a home with shag carpets or an orange Formica kitchen. Although the term preservation is simple, in actuality preserving a home is far from simple. Repair of the home must be done in respect to the material and design of the original construction. This means finding the hard to find materials that have long been thought to be extinct!

Renaissance Restorations specializes in such work and is your source for restoring classic Detroit area homes to their truly deserved glory. As a registered member of the Michigan Historic Preservation Network, we have the credentials and dedication needed for your important restoration project.

Historic home preservation can be a very exhaustive process that can include work on any or all of the following: roofing, electrical systems, plumbing, doors, windows, walls, ceilings, woodwork and masonry. Needless to say, that can be a rather daunting task. In addition, the entire project needs to be planned out in its entirety before work begins. Because every case is different and every home is unique, we will consult you in detail to determine which plan of action works best for your given situation.

The process of kitchen renovation usually begins with removing the old room elements in the reverse order in which they were installed. The progression usually works like this: appliances, plumbing, fixtures, counter tops and cabinets, before ending with the walls and ceiling.

For some kitchen projects, the process also entails some reframing in order to accommodate new doors, windows or walls. Of course, this amount of work may translate to some noise and dust.
No need to worry, though. Such things are a natural part of the renovation process. Renaissance Restorations works to minimize these inconveniences for our customers. We are also committed to a full cleanup following completion.

Many people laugh at the idea that the bathroom has an illustrious and fascinating history – but it really does. In fact, many of today’s hottest trends in bathroom design are deeply rooted in the bathing rituals of the world’s earliest civilizations. Homeowners who wish to create bathrooms suitable for a king or goddess need only walk through the pages of history for inspiration.

As early as 3000 B.C., city dwellers in the Middle East displayed a reverence for cleanliness by building huge communal bathtubs in the center of their towns. Private homes were built with bathing platforms that were early versions of today’s luxury showers and whirlpools. It is with history as an inspiration that Renaissance Restorations is installing bathroom elements that are suggestive of bygone eras.
When it comes to renovations your bathroom, it helps to think of it in two ways – as a retreat and as an investment. For the investment part of the formula, keep in mind that the bathroom is one of the sites of top return on investment in your entire home. This is especially apparent when it comes time to sell your home. Your investments in your bathroom today may actually profit you in the future.
As for the retreat part of the bathroom formula, we once again fall back on a history lesson. The concept of privacy began to evolve during the Middle Ages when monks separated privy seats with paneled walls and medieval castles were built with bathroom “closets” called garderobes.

Today’s overwhelmed and stressed homeowners are beginning to use their bathrooms to escape from the pressures of their hectic everyday lives. Not only are more bathrooms now designed with a separate compartment for the toilet, consumers are choosing products that soothe the spirit such as steam showers, body sprays, heated tile floors, whirlpool tubs and showers built for two.
