Leonard Nimoy may have died, but the culture he started will live on for a long time, and prosper. RIP
Mr. Nimoy won a worshipful global following as Mr. Spock, the resolutely logical human-Vulcan first officer in the television and movie juggernaut “Star Trek.”

I wonder how this will impact services like whatsapp which depend on the phone number not changing.

That's not the case... we can change our numbers in WhatsApp... It just reconfirms the new number via an SMS but that's about it.. all existing groups get the updated numbers.

The aliens don't exist ?  So disappointing. So first we were told it was  UFO sightings.... now we are told they weren't. Is there a possibility that in another 50 years CIA comes out with another report that they wanted you all to believe it was U-2 but in reality it was them testing the UFO they captured ?

Don't know what to believe now. Next thing they will tell me is that Santa doesn't exist.
Because U-2 planes flew higher than thought possible, many who saw them said they spotted alien spaceships. That was a highlight of the agency's ten most-read documents of 2014.

Am listening to a fascinating book called  "Rocket Men" by Craig Nelson. It goes into the background of how the first man landed on the moon.

Not surprisingly the folks behind this feat were mostly engineers who thought about most things using numbers. One of the numbers they all had to agree to very early in the program planning was the acceptable rate of failure.

They realized that while having redundant parts improves the odds of a mission, having redundancies in each of the million parts (or so) in a rocket ship may be impractical.... and even that may not guarantee 100% success. What they needed is a number they all should shoot for and make sure failures are reasonably low.

The question was... what was reasonable ? Was 1 in 50 failure ok ? Should they be satisfied with 1 in 100... or should it be 1 out of a 10000 ?

They eventually settled for 1 out of 1000 as the number of astronauts they were willing to loose in this program. And they wanted 99 of 100 missions to be successful.

Just reducing that number by a single digit (moving from 1 in a 1000 to 1 in a 100) would have saved them 1/2 of the program cost.

I was also surprised to find that a typical space ship from that era had more than a million parts in it. And not all of them worked as expected. Amazingly enough parts did work such that most of the missions (including Apollo 11) completed its mission successfully. Space shuttle, as a comparison, has more than 2.3 million parts in it. These are amazingly complex systems... built on top of an exploding rocket.

I'm yet to hear a consistent story about what really happened in the Sony hack. So to contribute towards the general confusion around what the heck is going on, I'll share my expert guess based on all the in-depth guesses I've read till now.

I think Sony engineered its own hack as a marketing stunt for the upcoming movie "The Interview". The movie,  which no one knew about, until the hack, is suddenly "the movie" to watch on Christmas day.

Jokes aside, Sony did what no security expert was able to do until now. It showed how many things can go wrong if they don't do a good job at securing the infrastructure. And it was able to do it in a way that every common man on the street could relate to.

I feel sorry for the current and past Sony employees who are being dragged through this. Most of them had no role to play in this.

I hope Sony does one day publishes an analysis of how they got 0wn3d and what they could have done to stop it.

Ha :) Good one! ... True + Crude Self-analysis of a Public Company ?... I doubt that'd ever happen. Especially not the old big-wigs.

Unless its on the day before it announces Chapter 11.... or the analysis itself gets 'leaked' out ;)

In another news, North Korea's internet went down this morning. All 7 of its internet users expressed shock and dismay.
The outage comes just days after President Obama announced a "proportional response" to the Sony hack.

After such a report from Sony, the other movie studios are probably wondering what they need to do to get hacked.

"In addition to the strong turnout for its limited theatrical release over the holiday weekend, after only four days, The Interview already ranks as Sony Pictures #1 online film of all time."

Regardless of how stupid this movie may be, and how bad the reviews are, I'm too curious now to not see this movie. I'll of course wait for it to hit Netflix before I do it. Certainly not worth 6 bucks from my wallet... but I'm glad Google and Microsoft agreed to help with this release.

I had hoped that the rains last couple of weeks would have increased the reservoir levels to the historical averages. Unfortunately we are still 4 storms away .
