Gather Around

The Critique:

Building reflections gathering around a giant X in the sky create immediate impact. Vivid blue and white, with accents of green, literally vibrate with energy. Lines, formed by buildings, cant at a dramatic diagonal – big and bold and spectacular. The clean blue of the sky keeps things simple and clear. Spatial relationships are there for the figuring out. Abundant patterns splash across buildings in nice detail.

What I had learned.

Look again. I’ve shot this location before but not with this perspective. Shooting with +Swee Oh on the streets of San Francisco is always a good time.

Around the Corner

The Critique:

Dazzling light reveals the leading character in this story in rich swaths of color and detail. ICM (intentional camera movement) adds energy and motion. The elongated shutter collects time. Strong vertical lines visually push the subject forward into the frame while adding strength and solidness to the composition. Faint patterns add interest and rich colors – mostly warm but offset by some cool blues – give this a sumptuous look. Spatial relationships are strong. I like how the sidewalk forms horizontal movement with the way light falls. It anchors the shot and adds energy with its juxtaposition next to the vertical elements.

What I had learned:

Every little side street holds a story.

Fragments

The Critique:

Light reflects, adding shape and pattern and interest to the shot. Seemingly unrelated objects are in fact intertwined as a section of window shares its bounty. Soft pinks and golds mingle with cool blues to add a bit of tension. I like the diagonal sweep of light – how it forms a leading line. I like the repetition of circles both real, and the echoes in that other world. Clearly abstract but well balanced – it lets the viewer determine the facts … or not.

What I had learned:

When I see light casting shapes, I stop and consider the possibilities.

Juxtaposition

The Critique:

Isolating pieces of building facades allows the viewer to appreciate the shapes, materials and details of each building. The blue and white colors scheme is crisp and energizing. It’s matched by bold shapes that celebrate patterns, sharp edges and round surfaces. There is wonderful contrast in textures of sky and glass and surface. The strong vertical look adds strength as lines reach up into the sky. Perspective and cropping have erased a lot of the information needed to establish true spatial relationships but the balance and line-up of elements adds depth and gives the abstract shot a sense of place.

What I had learned:

I like to isolate what interests me most in a scene. I also love shooting with +Swee Oh!

Awash in Color

Horizontal ICM (intentional camera movement) grabs shape and color and scatters it across the frame in an exciting fashion. Bold lines take my eye across the shot and then they do it again. Patterns evolve and add more visual power that is easily matched by vibrant colors mixing in absolute delight. Sunlight is dazzling – it lights up every detail. People always command a viewer’s eye but the blur of this subject – even though he inhabits a coveted spot in the photograph – takes second place to the drama unfolding before my eye.

What I had learned:

See the possibilities!

The One Who Got Away

The Critique:

A lingering look – a life forever about to be changed – a story unfolding. Triangular shapes of people anchor the shot. It’s fun. Look one way and it’s the three including the guy walking on the street. Yet look again, and it’s the three entering the cathedral door. Either way, it’s an odd man out. Wonderful tall fluted columns and architectural details form strong vertical lines that cradle the shot. Horizontal stairs provide the anchor that closes a frame on the three people in the doorway. Yet it is the man on the walkway who changes everything – adds a different nuance. His anchor is the walkway that will soon take him out of the story. Fitting.

What I had learned:

Street photography is full of surprises. I have this shot without the man walking by. But it’s devoid of anything but a common story.

Home of the Mermaid

The Critique:

Mimicking architectural shapes draw my eye as one shape echoes the other. I like how the plain blue sky lets the boldness of shape and pattern steal the show in this shot. Nothing detracts. Wonderful reflections add interest and hint at neighbors in the area. The diagonal cant is powerful as it thrusts upward to mostly fill the frame. The colors palette, with it’s cool greens and magentas, creates quiet tensions. The mermaid anchors the shot – she’s the touch of reality in this spatially challenged shot where things aren’t quite what they seem.

What I had learned:

I’ve shot this a lot but +Swee Oh suggested we shoot it again.

Walking on Drake’s Beach

The Critique:

ICM - intentional camera motion – captures the atmosphere of this magical spot without losing the important details to show its beauty. Lovely cliffs form diagonal lines and repetitive shapes that form a backdrop for the visitors. The triangular shape of sand and opposing shape of sea meet to anchor them in this elongated moment of time. Stunning light accents more shapes and definition. Spatial relationships and balance within the frame are strong. ICM really tells an important story here. Sands may shift with time but people are really transitory in their existence – this place will be here long after they are gone.

What I had learned:

Linger in beautiful moments.
