a pretty good intro talk on machine learning w/python. also a great (cursory) look at how powerful ipython notebook it. it's the handful of things you liked about matlab, with boatloads of awesome libraries, and python instead of the matlab one-off language. Jake Vanderplas, Olivier Grisel / Exploring Machine Learning with Scikit-learn

heh, nice.
NPR's prank this past Tuesday took a creative mind to come up with, but it was so simple it probably only took about 10 minutes to execute. They simply wrote an article titled "Why Doesn't America Read Anymore." You may have seen it floating around...

high frequency trading is bad all around, but it doesn't (immediately) hurt smart hands-off personal investors who are buying index funds and holding.

guess it's exactly what i expected to be happening in the "high-speed" market. still don't think it hurts the smart personal investor. if i'm buying something to hold for years (with the expectation of it doubling in price etc.) then it doesn't hurt me to pay 80.00 or 80.20. granted there's always the possibility that it all falls apart and causes a market-wide crash/mess. it's cool that someone saw the problem and is at least trying to build a solution.

interesting POV, but there aren't enough Elon Musks/such companies really.
This post originally appeared in Business Insider. Google CEO Larry Page has an unusual idea about what should happen to his billions should he die.  Instead of giving it to a philanthropic organization, he'd rather hand over his cash to Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla, SpaceX, and Solar City....

Musk is a great guy and we desperately need guys like him to push the boundaries and fix problems that governments won't/can't.  But at the same time, we also desperately need people to fight unsexy problems like malaria in Africa.

Ditto. UIUC cost me about a third of what a private school would have cost me... one of the best decisions I ever made.

there are some really solid ideas here
An eco-friendly idea: imagine if popular consumer packaged goods were redesigned so that the packaging reduced environmental waste and dissolve upon use.

pure awesome

Andrei Linde receives an awesome surprise visit telling him that his theory for the expansion of the universe has been bolstered by significant evidence. The look of joy and disbelief on his face is incredible.
