Code the holidays. This year, Google launched Made with Code to inspire millions of girls to try coding, and help them understand the creative things they can do with computer science. Now girls can use the introductory programming language Blockly to animate the lights of the state and territory trees at President’s Park during the holiday season. We can't wait to see designs from girls across the country lighting up the U.S. capital. #madewithcode

I'm going.

This Advent Vespers service in Vancouver features 60 minutes of uninterrupted choral singing, congregational hymns, meditative responsive readings and prayers. The 26-voice chamber choir will be conducted by our Music Director, Michael Murray, organist and Director of Music at St Philip’s Anglican Church in Vancouver and founding member of Vancouver’s musica intima. During an organ offertory, an offering will be taken in support of the Choir and The Menno Simons Centre, a residence for the 23 Christian university students attending Vancouver’s various universities and colleges.

I love this piece and want to learn how to play it! Bought the music recently. Thank you for showing the fingerings. (It's been decades since I took piano lessons as a kid.)

So glad the fingerings helped. It is a piece that sounds wonderful when you are playing it slowly as the harmonies and tune are so magical. So it takes some time to learn, but all that time is happy!

How do I get rid of this new 'What's hot on Google+" post that keeps showing up above all the people I have in my circles whose posts I want to see? I don't CARE what's hot on Google+!

Yay! Google Maps finally shows the names of bodies of water, so I no longer have to go over to Bing for that.

Uggh! New version of Google Calendar now shows birthdays of all the people in my circles on Google+. I don't want to see everyone's birthdays on my calendar, but the checkbox for turning that display off is greyed out. Anybody discover how to disable this annoying feature? I don't mind seeing people's birthdays on Facebook, since I use that specifically for social connection. But I use my Calendar for my own productivity. :-(

Whew! I found the answer. Nasty of Google to hide it so deeply in the UI:

I've played this piece arranged for brass quartet. Love it! Can't get enough of it. It's my favorite piece from the soundtrack of the film "The Tree of Life."

Happy Josiah S. Carberry Day! Don't miss the legendary absent-bodied Professor Carberry's lecture "Considering the Commonalities between Theories of Psychoceramics and Characteristics of Executive Leadership" at Brown University. (Psychoceramics is the study of cracked pots. For more info see http://bit.ly/josiah_carberry)

2011 was the "Year of the Movie" for me. Due to a confluence of several factors (see below), I ended up seeing more movies last year than my top three past movie-viewing years combined. And most of them were GREAT films. Here's my list of all 75 of those films, with a brief note about how I liked each one. Those which I would highly recommend to others are in bold.

The reasons I saw so many movies this year: 1) I joined Netflix for streaming videos; 2) Videomatica (rent-by-mail service) was closing so I wanted to see as many of their films as possible before they closed; 3) I took advantage of two big 50% off sales on all Criterion titles and picked up a ton of them; 4) I gained two housemates who enjoy movies so we have been watching lots of my new Criterion films as well as others; 5) I've been researching a project with a friend to list all the best "soul food movies" (http://soulfoodmovies.blogspot.com) for a gift to a certain institution and I wanted to see some of the ones we were considering; 6) I guess I've had more time on my hands than in previous years.

Phnomenal. I had the Phnom Penh Stew with Beef and Rice Noodles. It came very quickly and was delicious.
