Hangouts 2.0 for iOS: more reliable, more fun!

Today we’re launching the newest version of Hangouts for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, ready to download now on iTunes (http://goo.gl/FDOfq). The app has a brand new look and feel, is super easy to navigate, and includes a bunch of performance improvements. You can still make free voice and video calls, of course. Or send a quick photo. But we’re adding a few more features we think you’ll love:

- Stickers: express your mood with fun animated stickers. Think of them as emoji, but even more awesome.

- Video Messages: record and send short videos to everyone in the conversation. Now you can really say what you need to say.

- Location sharing: send a map of your current location with a few simple taps. Great for coordinating the whole gang when you’re ready to hangout IRL.

- Optimized for the iPad: enjoy big, beautiful video calls, and a two-pane conversation view. Perfect for the iPad’s larger screen.

We hope you enjoy the new Hangouts for iOS. As always, your feedback is an important part of making the app better, so give the new version a spin (http://goo.gl/FDOfq) and let us know what you think!

A new feature I was working on in G+ Photos recently rolled out. Now after you use the calendar to jump to a time (what were you doing in Feb 2012?) you can now scroll upwards and we'll load in more recent photos as you scroll.

Nowadays, infinite scrolling downwards is done a lot of places in the web; it was an interesting exercise to implement it in the other direction.

Scheduled HOA Events are here! Jump up and down and rejoice!
HOA Tips & HOA Events Tips
The ability for you to plan a (HOA) Hangout on Air event ahead of time is now here for all of us to use. We now have a Real HOA Event Tool

This means the use of the old Event tool may go away for most people and the confusion of an event being a 'hangout' or 'on air' type vs. a hybrid HOA Event may become a thing of the past!

The new "Schedule a Hangout on Air" button creates a SHOAE (Scheduled HOA Event)... with lots of great options and integration so here are the main things you should know about...
Using the Scheduled HOA Event Tool lets you:
► Harvest a Reserved Video Link for an upcoming HOA (you can advertise that ahead of time... Way ahead of time)
► Schedule a HOA Event in advance and advertise that event page
► Add in a Video or Graphic 'Trailer' which will be automatically replaced with the Live HOA video when you start broadcasting (no more hunting around for a YouTube link pasting spot just before you go live)
►  If you add a Graphic Trailer image, it can be an animated GIF
► With or without a Graphic Trailer there's a countdown timer when interacted with on the event page (not with a video trailer)
► You can swap out the trailer at any time before the show starts
► Q&A App is easily integrated into the SHOAE

Bottom Line here is that the new Scheduled HOA Event option is much smarter and more like what we've all been wanting for quite a while. Your Event it creates acts as a great landing page for live activity.

Read up on the official Help Page for the tool:

Browse your photo highlights by date

To help you find your photos even faster, we’re adding a drop-down calendar to “Highlights” that lets you jump straight to the year and month you’re looking for. To give it a try, just visit plus.google.com/photos on the desktop, and hover over the date at the top right of the page.

A new way to explore Google+ content by category

If you’re like me, you’re already using Google+ to keep up with your interests and discover content across topic areas. Today we’re making it even easier to browse content by category with a new “Explore” experience on desktop and Android. The desktop version includes:

1. A summary view that highlights posts across multiple categories.
2. A starter set of topics (like Music, Sports and Photography) that you can click on to explore further. What’s Hot is also listed here, instead of in the navigation bar.
3. The ability to search for specific topics, and read what others are saying about them.
4. The option to “go deeper” on relevant sub-topics (like #HolidayBaking) when you select or search for a topic (like #FoodAndDrink).
5. An easy way to follow the people and/or join the communities that are talking about the stuff you’re into.

To get started on desktop, simply click “Explore” at the top of your Home stream. On Android, you’ll start seeing a new “Explore Google+” card in the What’s Hot stream.

Today’s update is initially available to U.S. English users, but we’ll expand to more countries and languages over time. We’re also rolling out “Explore” gradually, so check back soon if you don’t see it yet.

Two new kinds of #AutoAwesome: Twinkle and Snow

Just in time for the holidays, we’re rolling out two new ways to make your Google+ photos more awesome, automatically:

1) Twinkle: upload a new photo of something that sparkles (like a Christmas tree or a chandelier), and we'll gift you a version with lights that actually twinkle.

2) Snow: upload a new photo with snow to Google+, and we'll gift you a version with snow that’s actually falling.

In both cases, you'll get a notification when your #AutoAwesome image is ready. We hope these features help you celebrate the ‘wonder’ in winter wonderland! #googleplusupdate
