Do you need federal records for your genealogy research?

I do. And I am packing for an exciting trip.

Next week I will be attending Gen-Fed 2016 (The Genealogical Institute on Federal Records) in Washington, DC. I am honored to have been accepted as one of the 36 researchers to attend this years week long institute focusing on in-depth training about the federal records held by the US National Archives in Washington, DC.

Gen-Fed is the new name for the National Institute on Genealogical Research which began in 1950 and was held every annually through 2014. I am excited to be a part of its rebirth as Gen-Fed and looking forward to meeting both old and new friends among the researchers gathered there as both students and instructors.

Besides research at both Archives I and II, we will also get an opportunity to attend special evening hours at both the DAR Library and the Library of Congress.

For me this is as exciting as planning an expedition to Mt. Everest. So, my friends, wish me luck in reaching the summit of my Gen-Fed research journey. I am so excited to be on that journey with a distinguished group of expert instructors.

I WILL be doing research while I am there. So, if you have research needs in federal records, please contact me as soon as possible using the contact button above (subject "Fed Research") or call me at 970-946-4876 (say "Federal Research" in your message).

I will be traveling, so you may need to leave a message, but I will get back to anyone who contacts me before 5pm EDT on 10 July.

After that please leave a message. and if I can get back to you, I will. But understand that I will be very busy and cannot guarantee to get back to you before returning to my office on 18 July.

Joining with all Durango and La Plata County residents hoping that the toxic sediment released from the Gold King Mine last week will indeed wash past all the communities in its path through the Four Corners with a minimum of environmental damage. Communities in Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah will be affected while we shut off drinking and irrigation water intakes and we'll be monitoring groundwater for a long time to come.

I take hope from the announcement that the fingerling fish that were impounded in traps as the toxic plume passed through Durango are, with only one exception, still living. And that gives me hope for the survival of many of the the other fish, muskrats, swallows, fish eagles, ducks, geese, blue herons, and all those who come to drink at our beautiful river.
