For a couple of years in the early 1970s, the 105-acre plant grounds were home to an avian-themed park called Busch Gardens that included an Asian-style pagoda, boat rides and a domed ice cave. Even after the park closed, Houstonians curious about malt, hops and "beechwood aging" made their way east down Interstate 10 to tour the brewery and hoist complimentary beers in the hospitality room. An array of craft breweries unheard of two decades ag...

Co-founder Ryan Soroka said 8th Wonder, which had its own person making all sales and deliveries its first two years in business, saw the number of retail accounts increase by about 50 percent immediately upon signing with Silver Eagle. Ben E. Keith, the nation's third-largest independent beer distributor, will sell B-52 Brewing's Payload Pilsner, Wingman Wheat IPA, Breakfast Stout and Double IPA in Fort Bend, Harris, Galveston and Montgomery co...

[...] one of Houston's masters of sweet treats is giving it prominence on the dessert menu. Sara Brook, who drinks neither coffee nor beer but is fond of the flavors they add, will offer a series of eight craft-beer-infused cakes, puddings, tortes and tarts through the end of the year for her monthly specials at Dessert Gallery. Anyone who's attended one of the growing number of craft-beer dinners around town already understands the pleasures o...

A barrel of oil holds 42 gallons and a beer barrel 31, a fact familiar to more than a few Houstonians. Handojo, too, is in the energy trade, a computer programmer who takes on oil and gas projects. [...] brewing took a strong hold on all three, and they soon started raising money to turn their hobby into a livelihood. The three-beer starting lineup is on the sessionable end of the craft scale: the 7-Iron blonde ale is the lightest, at 4.5 perc...

Karbach Brewing Co.'s showpiece restaurant set to open next month has clever little touches - light fixtures made from beer bottles, bar stools fashioned from wooden barrels, old corral boards from the owners' South Texas ranch - and more than 200 square feet of glass windows that offer a glimpse of how the company does its business. [...] to truly understand what the fast-growing Houston craft brewery is about, and where it's heading at an asto...

Silver Eagle's fee hike has some craft beer bars pondering a boycott.
The issue boiled over this week when Silver Eagle Distributors instituted an unannounced 20 percent hike in the deposit it charges retailers when they purchase a keg filled with beer, local proprietors said. Affected brands include Houston's Saint Arnold, Karbach and 8th Wonder and such national brands as Firestone-Walker, Lagunitas, Sierra Nevada and Stone. Because of state laws governing how beer is sold in Texas, no other wholesalers are all...

A year-old Austin brewery has prevailed in round 1 of its legal battle with craft beer giant New Belgium Brewing Co. over the rights to a product name both claim as their own. In Denver, a federal magistrate judge has ruled that Colorado has no jurisdiction in New Belgium's lawsuit against Oasis Texas Brewing Co. to stop or severely restrict its use of the name Slow Ride for its pale ale, one of its four core beers. The fight is the latest in a...

The city welcomed new festivals, too, from the tidy Firkin Fest for true aficionados to the ambitious Big Brew in the downtown convention center. Houston Beer Week returns, beginning Saturday, with an eight-day lineup of beer dinners, tap takeovers and other special events across the city and, more so than ever, in the suburbs. For Houston Beer Week, the committee encouraged bars, breweries, groceries and restaurants to host special events that...
