Long Beach finds difficult task bridging downtown to the waterfront

Although Long Beach has the benefit of a picturesque seaside setting, the city and waterfront are like two separate worlds.

It has been a couple of generations since Long Beach pushed its downtown shoreline south and filled it in to create a new waterfront, and consistently city leaders and residents have raised the questions, “Why isn’t it better?” and “How can we make it better?”

It’s a postcard day on the Long Beach waterfront. Ken Yuen, from Malaysia, is wandering around the Pine Avenue Pier shooting selfies with Shoreline Village and the Queen Mary in the background. Members of the Ramos family are munching on ice cream while watching a crowded boat departing for a harbor tour. And Kara Hatcher and her three boys are enjoying the weather as they meander outside the Hyatt Hotel. “We’re from Bakersfield, so you can’t not...

Startups are finding a new place to land in Los Angeles

Tech companies are discovering a business climate they like near the beaches of South Bay. They're finding:

- Newer spaces
- More affordable
- More parking
- Less traffic congestion

Instead of setting up shop among the thousands of tech businesses and startups in western Los Angeles, vegan meat-alternative manufacturer Beyond Meat decided to call El Segundo its home.

Los Angeles must fix aging pipes before more burst, mayor says

Garcetti returns from vacation to address the #UCLA flood that poured 20 million gallons into campus last week. #LA
The city must aggressively update its aging water mains, but should not raise water rates to pay for the fixes for now, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti said at a press conference Monday.

Bring on the freeway series

The teams will meet twice at Dodger Stadium starting tonight and then twice in Anaheim, four games just enough time for the sides to work up some heartfelt disgust for one another.
LOS ANGELES – The Dodgers just lost 2 of 3 to the Cubs of all people, the good news being the Angels don’t have near the history that the Cubs do. No team does, the Cubs spared from being the most embarrassing franchise in the history of torn ACLs because of an unyielding fan base and the fact they grow ivy on the walls of that little tavern of a stadium everyone loves. Yeah, the Dodgers finally receive a break, the Angels arriving armed with not...

For charter school, new school year brings a new home in Westchester after controversy

After months of controversy and uncertainty over a proposal to split the school into two campuses, parents forged an arrangement with the St. Joan of Arc parish in Los Angeles so that all the kids could continue to go to school together in one location.

Principal Alison Kerr said almost all the parents will donate time, resources and tools, completely voluntarily, to help set up the school in its new location.

Mar Vista is the youngest of the Citizens of the World Charter group of schools, which work to teach social and emotional mindfulness in addition to the istandard curriculum.

It’s a familiar end-of-summer scene: a quick trip to campus to scope out what’s in store for the next year. High-fives are exchanged, and "hellos" are shouted down the hall as classrooms are peeked into. That’s just the parents.

Where is in the world is Paul Tanaka?

For the two campaign rivals for Los Angeles County Sheriff, the differences in their campaigns are clear. While Jim McDonnell has continued racking up high-powered endorsements after receiving more than 49 percent of the vote in the June 3 primary, Paul Tanaka has seemingly gone underground. Consultants have left the campaign. His social networking sites have gone silent. One of his last appearances was in a courtroom.

Spending 40 minutes on Facebook? You're average

Consider that on Friday, when Facebook went down for 30 minutes, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was flooded with emergency calls. Sgt. Burton Brink responded with a Tweet that a Facebook outage was not 911 material.
