Dotting the I

Colorful bindis are being handed out to tribal women in India by a philanthropic organization. When worn on the forehead, each dot delivers a daily dose of 100-150 micrograms of iodine (chemical symbol: I) which is absorbed by the skin. At least 70 million Indians suffer from iodine deficiency disorders. Sure, oral supplements or iodized salts are more efficient, but the tribal women won't take them. The bindis are a socially more acceptable, and creative, approach to dietary compliance!

Bad Air: Iodine deficiencies were described by ancient Roman writers and medieval travelers, who would encounter entire villages in the Alps or southern Europe struck by cretinism.  Thought to be due to "bad air" or "stagnant water" in the mountains, we now know that dwarfism, deformed bones and intellectual disability are due to lack of iodine-rich thyroid hormone. Goiter belts characterized the more mildly afflicted inland regions of Europe and N. America, where populations were marked by enlarged thyroids and grossly swollen throats. Along the coast, however, wave action disperses natural iodine salts from sea water into the air, from where it enters our ecosystem. No wonder, sea air was recommended for recuperating invalids.

The Rise and Fall of I: After the discovery of iodine in 1811, Lugol's solution (mostly potassium iodide, or KI) became the universal panacea of western medicine. Medical students were advised:

If ye don’t know where, what, and why
Prescribe ye then K and I

But too much of a good thing led to the discovery that excess iodine actually blocked thyroid hormone production (known as Wolff-Chaikoff effect). Today, the Reference Daily Intake or RDI has decreased from 1 gram, to 150 micrograms, which many practitioners believe is too little. Proponents of iodine therapy point out the benefits in preventing breast cancer, skin disorders and more. For a fascinating history of the controversies and facts see the article in the reference.

One of the best therapists I have come across in all my travels. Jen can loosen up almost any tightness, but be ready for thorough deep tissue work if you request it. The initial entrance is just a staircase with a door in between two buildings off of Terrace and the main door is one floor down. The accommodations are simple but clean.

Great service and excellent decor. The staff are very relaxed but efficient. I never mind coming through here but you can beat the size and simplicity of the layout. Plenty of food and shopping choices.

My new favorite restaurant in Wellington. It sits near a quite neighborhood and is very charming. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. Definitely make reservations as their is rather limited seating, but there were three groups of about 8 in each party to give you an idea. There is parking on the street and it is BYO for wine if you wish. The food was excellent and I can highly recommend the lamb.

A very quaint and casual dining experience. I had The Burns for breakfast and it was quite good. It has an american diner feel to it and the prices are reasonable. The music will be the one nuance that really make this place stand out in your memory and it's from a nostalgic period no matter how old you are.

We stopped in here for a quick lunch and we were really pleased. The spice level on the food was perfect. It is a simple Malaysian restaurant but I would definitely come back. The decor is simple but you come here for the flavors - you won't be disappointed. The staff is friendly and we got our meal in a reasonable amount of time for the large group that we were.

Don't let the name give you the allusion of a simple cafe, this is way more than a coffee shop. They have a very nice wine list and their menu has a nice variety without being over the top. The plates are well portioned and tend to have an artistic flare. You walk in to the bar area and the restaurant is up a short set of stairs and goes pretty far back so they can handle a good size group. Be sure to make reservations as they can get quite busy.

Leelawadee used to be much better but it seems to have gone the way of just a bit above rubbing lotion. The facility still like very good. You have to go down between the buildings to find the entrance/stairs that also lead to the internet cafe and hair cuts salon. Go to the third floor.
