I am thankful for being a Baby Boomer. For having lived through the most prosperous times in history by an accident of birth. For having an easier time pulling myself up by my own bootstraps when most of us had boots. For not believing that I owe my success to no one but me, and in turn deriding those who were not as lucky. For not thinking that my good fortune makes me somehow better than others. For not using religion for political gain or profit, or as a shield for my own shortcomings. For not falling into the trap of thinking that I deserve more, and others deserve less. For not giving into fear, or let others manipulate me by instilling fear in me. I am thankful to everyone who was there when I needed it, because we are all connected and no one lives in a vacuum. And when we, Baby Boomers are gone, I hope that our children will be thankful that they were able to separate the good in us from the bad, and still remember us fondly.

I was reading a book (about interjections, oddly enough) yesterday which included the phrase "In these days of political correctness..." talking about no longer making jokes that denigrated people for their culture or for the colour of their skin. And I thought, "That's not actually anything to do with 'political correctness'. That's just treating other people with respect."
Which made me oddly happy. I started imagining a world in which we replaced the phrase "politically correct" wherever we could with "treating other people with respect", and it made me smile.
You should try it. It's peculiarly enlightening.
I know what you're thinking now. You're thinking "Oh my god, that's treating other people with respect gone mad!" - Neil Gaiman
