E-Mart is the Target / Wal-mart of South Korea. They have absolutely everything and you need not go elsewhere for anything.
They are closed today.
That's right, they are closed every other Sunday.
Because they started killing off the small retailers and local neighborhood stores and the landscape of each neighborhood was at risk....
And if those small stores closed, surely the tiny organic market next door would have no community to cater to... Neither would the barbecue chicken place... Neither would the indi-RPG game mini figures store be able to keep their doors open.....
E-mart doesn't sell those little mini figures because they do not have mass awareness, because they are not from a successful TV show , so if that shop can't stay open, who would sell those figures? If nobody is selling them, how would the manufacturers continue to make money? That whole slice a product category would be gone forever.
And if the little product categories disappear, you would be left with nothing but products related to TV shows you find on television.
The big stuff.
So E-Mart did something unheard of back in the States....
They decided to CLOSE DOWN on the busiest weekend shopping days so the surrounding neighborhood shops would continue to thrive.
Need masking tape or lip balm? E-Mart is closed today and you're going to have to get it from your neighborhood store for a couple pennies more. Horror, maybe even 50 cents more.
...and because you spent those extra pennies, unique shops selling goods you can't find at E-mart will be able to stay open and your life won't be the frickin same every 10 miles for the rest of your days!
So I will support emart because they stopped to look out for the little guy... because ultimately little guy is their customer and if you squish too many of your customers, eventually you have nothing but a giant empty store which serves as a showroom for consumers scanning UPC codes with their smartphones to do some online shopping.
