What happens when a #judge loses his cool in #court?
From the state that gave us Stand Your Ground, we now have Stand Your Ground, Courtroom Edition. Or perhaps it’s Stand Your Gavel – On the Public Defender’s Head. You have to hand it to Florida. Time and again, on the scale of judicial craziness, the state does something, like earlier this year when the courts returned a Glock pistol and other firearms to a blind man who fatally shot his friend during a drunken argument, where you groan, “Oh, the...

Seattle, Washington has raised its minimum wage to $15/hour. Will this be good or bad for #smallbusiness?
On June 3, 2014, Seattle, Washington’s progressive City Council unanimously passed unprecedented legislation that gradually phases in a minimum wage of $15.00 per hour, making it the highest in the nation. The federal minimum wage has been stuck at $7.25 since 2009, and attempts to raise it have repeatedly failed in Congress. If fully implemented, Seattle’s minimum wage would be double the national minimum and represent a 61 percent hike from Was...

This fantastic story in The Atlantic explains everything about why we do what we do. The #legal system is complicated and expensive, which is why we work every day to make it simple and affordable for all.
For many Americans, legal services are out of reach. But that's beginning to change.

Cost is a bigger question for the individual or family than it is for institutions. Big gorillas are shaping the face of law; as money moves away from the middle class, it may reduce the number of lawyers involved in family law and other private concerns.

After #divorce, it is important is learn how to co-parent. As your #children get out of school for #summer break, it is important to know how to balance your child's time with their other parent.
Before you know it the end of the academic year will be here and your kids out of school for the summer. Balancing quality time with your children during their summer break can be a struggle when you’re still working full time and your kids have other activities lined up – summer camp and sports-related camps, play-dates and sleepovers with friends, out-of-town vacations, advanced classes and driving school, part-time jobs, and other goings-on. O...

I think this is really important and am glad you brought it up.  My sister is looking for a divorce lawyer right now and all I can think about are her three kids.  I understand it's a trial and it will get easier with time but I hope it doesn't take too big of a toll on the kids.

Quality > Quantity when it comes to leveraging #bigdata to benefit your #smallbusiness. And collecting and analyzing it isn't as hard as you might think.
The idea of analyzing data can be intimidating to already stressed-out small business owners.

Does anyone know where to get a lawyer in Kamloops? I'd hoped it would be easy to find one. I'm trying to make sure I get the best I can for my money.

#SMBs can be found from sea to shining sea, but which is the best #state to do #business?
Starting up a new business is always a risky and formidable endeavor, but some states make it easier for entrepreneurs to set up shop than others. In December 2013, The Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council released a report that ranked states based on one major criteria- how helpful they are to small business owners. The study evaluated the cost of running a small business within each state’s borders and ranked the states accordingly. Forty-...

Believe it or not, many defendants are now using Reality TV-esque #videos to help build sympathy in #courtrooms. Stan Sinberg weighs in.
When you think of great prison escape movies, ones that come to mind are “Papillon,” “Escape From Alcatraz,” “The Shawshank Redemption,” and, if Doug Passon has anything to say about it, the one you made that convinced the judge to give your convicted client a vastly reduced sentence. Passon is an Arizona assistant federal public defender who, according to The Wall Street Journal, is a “pioneer” in the making of “mitigation sentencing videos.” Th...

Next time you get called for #juryduty, better check your wardrobe. Some courts are cracking down on dress code in the #court room.
A pair of Florida attorneys are seeking a new trial for their convicted clients because the courtroom security guards mistakenly thought they were the Fashion Police, or working the red velvet rope line at the hottest club in South Beach. Attorneys John Bergendahl and Bruce Zimet, whose clients were convicted of defrauding the US and financial institutions in a federal mortgage scheme that ran more than five years, filed the retrial motion partly...

Can a chord progression be #copyrighted? Led Zeppelin is being sued by surviving members of the band Spirit, which claims Zeppelin stole the riff to "Stairway to Heaven"
You may have heard that Led Zeppelin is being sued for copyright infringement for “borrowing” the opening chord progression on their mega-hit, “Stairway To Heaven.” It’s such an iconic progression that it’s going through your head right this second, without me having to hum it for you, which is a good thing, since I have no idea how I would manage that. It’s also a song that Zeppelin recorded in 1971. Forty-three years ago. Zeppelin’s being sued ...

In #NewYork, a man is suing almost everyone for all the money on Earth. Could this silly lawsuit show just how out of control our #legal system has gotten?
While The New York Times and Wall Street Journal drone on about class action lawsuits and criminal cases involving government malfeasance, it took the tabloid New York Post to report on the most momentous lawsuit of all time: Man Suing Almost Everyone For All the Money On Earth Yup. According to The Post, Anton Purisima, 62, filed his claim in Manhattan federal court against New York City, its transit system, the chain bakery Au Bon Pain, two loc...

What would anyone even do with $195 trillion? Open a high-end coffee shop in Manhattan? Buy a mansion with diamond doorknobs? At least these kinds of things are good for a chuckle.

Rocket Lawyer is pleased to announce the results of its Semi-Annual Small Business Index, alongside National #SmallBusiness Week.
This week marks the 51st annual National Small Business Week, and small businesses have more reason than ever to celebrate.
