When New Jersey governor Chris Christie asked his doctor if he really needed lap band surgery, the doctor said:

"If you came in here with cancer and I told you that I had a 40-minute surgery that'd give you a 90 percent chance of cure, would you sign up?’"

He told him yes. The next question?

"Well, then why wouldn't you do that to cure obesity?"

The attempt to save the giant panda costs millions of dollars a year. Experts believe more money is probably being spent to save the giant panda than any other species in the world.

Is it possible that we’re spending too much to save the giant panda?

"It's a cult, of course it is," Oscar-winning film director Paul Haggis says of Scientology.

The church, however, calls him "The Hypocrite of Hollywood" and says he hasn't been an active member for years.

The most famous Scientologist to ever leave the church and speak out publicly discusses his experiences exclusively with +NBC News's Rock Center on Thursday at 10/9c.

Stephanie Holten obtained an order of protection after her ex-husband threatened to "put a gun in my mouth and pull the trigger," she said.

He was served, but no one took his gun away. Nine hours later, he was at Holten's door threatening to shoot.

"He starts yelling at me, 'I was served a protection order today and I'm going to kill you. I'm going to shoot you,'" Holten recalled.

"I'm on my knees by the living room couch and he's standing over me. And I am looking at this gun barrel."

Wayne County, Mich., Prosecutor Kym Worthy has seen her share of grisly crime, but even she was shocked by a discovery in 2009 at a former police storage warehouse. There, stacks of dusty boxes were found on the shelves of the warehouse. The boxes contained thousands of untested rape kits, some decades old.

“What we were potentially looking at, at that time, was over 10,000 rape kits, representing over 10,000 cases where women had reported, whose lives and what had happened to them was sitting on a shelf and nobody cared. I was shocked, and I think I was kind of stunned -- and not too much stuns me,” Worthy said.

It happened on flight from Washington, DC to San Diego.

The pilot’s urgent question reverberated over the intercom during a cross country flight, “Is there a doctor on board?” A passenger was experiencing severe chest pains, and luckily for him Dr. Eric Topol was sitting in seat 6A.

Topol is the energetic chief academic officer of Scripps Health, a prominent cardiologist and the foremost figure in the field of wireless medicine. According to Topol, “the smart phone will be the hub of the future of medicine.”

That day on the airplane, Dr. Topol displayed the potential of wireless medicine when he snapped an AliveCor device onto his iPhone and performed a cardiogram at 30,000 feet. Using this portable, cellphone powered device, Topol was able to see that the passenger was definitely having a heart attack and he recommended an urgent landing. The passenger was rushed to the hospital and survived.

Find out more about Mobile Health tonight on +Rock Center with Brian Williams tonight at 10/9c!
