I'd take his idea that you don't have to worry about evidence, since it's all math, much more seriously if ideas based on wonderfully consistent math didn't fall in the face of evidence all the time in physics. Look up the Hawking-Turok bet on gravity waves, just as one recent example. Or several variations of string theory getting ruled out last year...
