PSA about terrorism and any breeds of hate-crime.
The primary objective of terrorism is to create terror. Killing people is just one of the most effective (low effort, high effect) means of doing this, and amplification provided by the media gives massive potency to this. If a terrorists objective is to make people scared, and you become scared they HAVE SUCCEEDED. The way to beat it is NOT to ramp up security, lock down whole cities, and ensure that everyone is in a constant state of fear! The solution is to treat the deaths with the same gravity as any other solvable (yes - the root cause of terrorism is solvable, but NOT WITH GUNS!) problem. If the news services spent time on PREVENTABLE DEATHS relative to the number of people dying, they would mostly talk about tedious topics like cancer, smoking, heart disease and road traffic. This would not sell well, so you can understand their motivation in portraying a skewed reality. As you as an individual probably cannot influence what the news reports, your primary method to NOT BEING TERRORISED is to listen to less news reports and when you're talking to friends ask them to tell you something nice which happened today. Just for one point of perspective to the event at the OEZ; every week on average 14 people die on the roads in Bavaria - considering that road deaths are usually the result of one person taking action (driving 10kmh too fast, phoning while driving, drinking while driving, ...) causing the death of himself and others this is not so different a source of death than terrorism.

A friend is doing a presentation at Foscon in Cologne in August on Geek parenting, and has a survey around parenting habits to gather some data for the talk. If you are a geek and a parent, please help him out and fill out the survey. :)

letsencrypt now entering public beta. It's super easy to generate your certs too - my site is already running on a letsencrypt cert now. :) And just in time too - the renewal for my 12EUR/year paid cert was just coming up... guess it would be a good time to make a donation to the letsencrypt project! :)

Just another end-to-end encrypted messenger? I like it: it's open source, and it's free, and soon there will be a desktop client too which really is a killer argument compared to Threema.

Let's think of the French on the streets today. Every month 284 French die on the streets due to carelessness, un-enforced regulations and a failure to be vigilant. Of course a targeted attack as recently occurred is a terrible tragedy, but is it a greater tragedy than all the other deaths which are occurring every day would have been avoidable at a much lesser cost (monetary and social) than anti-terror panic and theatre? Surely the each of us has the choice to be terrorised or not; most of us choose to drive a car, eat salty/fatty foods, smoke a cigarette and many other activities which are much more likely to kill us early than some nut-job, and we're not shaking in our boots as we chew the burger we just bought at the drive-through while cruising down the road.
Let's divert 10% of the budget being thrown at all these wars against one of the actual leading causes of death and see how many lives we can save! Wouldn't you love to have had a few more years with that Grandpa, Aunty or friend who died early of something fixable?
