This looks interesting.  They are still in beta. Waiting for my invitation.

The Ello Manifesto:
"Your social network is owned by advertisers.

Every post you share, every friend you make and every link you follow is tracked, recorded and converted into data. Advertisers buy your data so they can show you more ads. You are the product that’s bought and sold.

We believe there is a better way. We believe in audacity. We believe in beauty, simplicity and transparency. We believe that the people who make things and the people who use them should be in partnership.

We believe a social network can be a tool for empowerment. Not a tool to deceive, coerce and manipulate — but a place to connect, create and celebrate life.

You are not a product."
Simple, beautiful & ad-free.

This is a great blog for graphic novel reviews. My students especially love the Japanese imprints. I hope this is helpful. In the Boston area we are all polishing off our summer book orders. When do people do big orders in other parts of the world? Please share specialized review sources : )

Looking forward to this great community! I am a high school TL of a learning commons located in Concord, MA, USA. I have worked in libraries in the U.K. and Switzerland, and am currently pursuing a EdD (doctorate in education). My thesis focuses on the teacher-librarian experience of transitioning from a traditional school library to the learning commons service model, and the critical elements required for a successful transition. Thanks for initiating the group, +Joyce Valenza : )

Shoot or Shute
We are busily checking out books for the summer, stamped with a due date of September 8, 2014. I was gathering a stack of requests for a colleague, and as I went through the stacks I was talking to myself (as I often do). A student, one of our regulars, loo...

Curricular Connections  -

Marc Aronson and Mary Ann Cappiello presented to school librarians on the role of nonfiction in our collections and implications for the CCSS. I have a new appreciation for my own cultural biases regarding reading, and a new appreciation for the importance of highlighting nonfiction (especially narrative) for pleasure reading and as curriculum texts. http://bit.ly/1kMrZP5

This is a superb blog post on repackaging research in a 1:1 environment. The 5 points at the end provide clear talking points to use in discussions with  curriculum committees/administration.
1. Administer the Google litmus test
2. Insert Essential Question at the beginning which will foster synthesis of those facts and conclusions
3. Require credible library resources to be used
4. Embed technology for engagement - somewhere
5. Insure that students have an opportunity to "present" their knowledge
Great blog post, +Paige Jaeger !
This morning I received a desperate plea from a super-librarian who has seen her program go down-the-tubes with the arrival of one-on-one devices incorrectly implemented in silo-classrooms.   What a shame.  As a district adop...
