Toshimana by the window – She stands calmly, showing the special quality of  Geiko (and some senior maiko) in which their years of practice of dance and other arts, eventually becomes fully embodied. Each stance or movement is 'just so' – considered, elegant and balanced. Perhaps this skill for embodied grace is their strongest art. Odori Dancer - I really wanted to include some images of the stunning Odori performances by Geiko and Maiko in my book. This is a lion resting under a peony rose if I remember right. My Kickstarter reached it's initial goal in the first day and there are only a few of the 'early bird specials' left! Do have a look at my video there anyway. Link- https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/robertvankoesveld/geiko-and-maiko-of-kyoto. It still has three weeks to run but specials are limited. #geisha   #maiko   #kyoto   #geiko   #odori   #japaneseculture

in flight - by the river - Mother Ganges is also called the Hooghly River in the section that flows through Kolkata. It is often at its best in the early morning. On this morning thousands of pilgrims were crossing the bridge from the railway station to make their way towards the Sagar Mela which is celebrated where the River meets the sea.

Sadhu Sunday #1 - this was one of the friendlier sadhus, who we found here in Kolkata, while on their way to the big mela on the coast: the Ganga Sagar. They and other pilgrims stay in a big park in the city centre on their way and get access to basic health care and food, as well as presumably raise some funds. There were around 3 million at the Ganga Sagar on the 15th I am told. This compares to 30 million at the mega mela's like the Kumbh Mela or 300,000 or so at the little mela we went to yesterday: the Joydev-Kenduli with lots of wonderful Baul singers.

Toshikana makes her Erikae - Toshikana emerges on her first day as a geiko, after serving her years of apprenticeship as a maiko. I had photographed her privately, for the second time, the previous day wearing the complex hairstyle worn only at that time. This day however was her first day wearing the wig of a Geiko. The terms Geiko and Maiko are those used in Kyoto, although Geisha is used in the rest of Japan. Consequently, my book (Now released on Kickstarter) is called 'Geiko and Maiko of Kyoto' www.kickstarter.com/projects/robertvankoesveld/geiko-and-maiko-of-kyoto

Starting the day - it seems that every Kolkata street has it's own little temple. Or two. This one was built around a big tree with the part inside the shrine wrapped in gold cloth.

Photography: Spirit of Place:People of Presence
Introduction

Travel and cultural photography. Author: Geiko and Maiko of Kyoto and Bhutan Heartland

My camera and I are attracted to the ‘spirit’ of places and to people with ‘presence’. This requires warm curiosity and engagement with places and people so that my images can reflect the depth of the spirit and the openness of their presence. Sometimes the elements combine, such as when the disciplined beauty of old Kyoto is portrayed in the artistry of a mature geiko (geisha).

As a full time travel and cultural photographer I am often observing how individuals and communities find ways to manage the fascinating intersections of past and present. There can be a freshness about the way some people express their centuries-old lineage while living in a changing world. When traveling in Asia, Africa, Europe, North America or Antarctica, I can see this is a challenge for village farmers, traditional nomads, city folk, penguins and polar bears. This theme can provide inspiration for conversations and photography that is about more than costume and cultural difference.

Since setting aside my long career as a psychotherapist, I have enjoyed these photographic opportunities that have led to other activities such as:  publishing photo books - Bhutan Heartland (Fremantle Press, 2010), co-created with my wife, Libby Lloyd; leading photo expeditions – Bhutan, Japan, India, China; making blogs and websites – www.robertvankoesveld.com
