Myanmar Market Mood : some locations seem to have a certain atmosphere or feeling which can be hard to name in the, often, time limited 'work' of photography. And actually, is it the place's mood, your own mood or just the gear you are using or even just the time of day? There certainly is an interaction between my own mood and that of the place that can emerge (usefully) in the images. More so if I can notice it at the time

The opening of the kabuki season
(temporarily moved to the Pontocho theatre during earthquake proofing renovations) brought five morning migrations where groups of Geiko and Maiko, glided in, swan-like in their precision and elegance.

Each kagai has it's own day and the theatre is also busy with lunch bearing bike riders providing splendid picnics for the breaks. (1/3 in set)

I am delighted to introduce Robert Van Koesveld and his photography. Robert is one of my favorite photographers to follow. I asked him to submit my favorite of his images and he graciously sent it for your enjoyment. Grab a coffee, put your feet up and enjoy the beauty of the world Robert sees. And then, dream big! Where will your dreams take you? What is your first step? Now....take that step. All images supplied by Robert Van Koesv...

Another image from the second day of the Erikae of Geiko Ichitomi from the Nakagishi Okiya in Gion Kobu. Newly debuted geiko always take time to make personal visits to Okiya and Ochaya and certain local businesses and are usually followed by a group of enthusiastic photographers. Itchtomi wore an especially wonderful shibori kimono. Geiko in this process of visiting are always accompanied by someone very familiar with the kagai and its culture, often an otokoshi, as was the case today.

Introduction

Travel and cultural photographer. Author: Geiko and Maiko of Kyoto and Bhutan Heartland

My camera and I are attracted to the ‘spirit’ of places and to people with ‘presence’. This requires warm curiosity and engagement with places and people so that my images can reflect the depth of the spirit and the openness of their presence. Sometimes the elements combine, such as when the disciplined beauty of old Kyoto is portrayed in the artistry of a mature geiko (geisha).

As a full time travel and cultural photographer I am often observing how individuals and communities find ways to manage the fascinating intersections of past and present. There can be a freshness about the way some people express their centuries-old lineage while living in a changing world. When traveling in Asia, Africa, Europe, North America or Antarctica, I can see this is a challenge for village farmers, traditional nomads, city folk, penguins and polar bears. This theme can provide inspiration for conversations and photography that is about more than costume and cultural difference.

Since setting aside my long career as a psychotherapist, I have enjoyed these photographic opportunities that have led to other activities such as:  publishing photo books - Bhutan Heartland (Fremantle Press, 2010), co-created with my wife, Libby Lloyd; leading photo expeditions – Bhutan, Japan, India, China; making blogs and websites – www.robertvankoesveld.com
