I have had many people who know I live in Alberta reaching out to ask if I am okay. I am over 400 miles away from the fires at Fort McMurray. I thank you greatly for your concern.

I am in shock and dismayed by the events and extreme suffering my fellow Albertans from Fort McMurray have had to endure and will continue to endure for the days ahead.

Please, if you share my grief for the suffering of these people, the best way for you to help is to donate to the Canadian Red Cross: https://donate.redcross.ca

There will be a long road to recovery. Upwards of 80,000 people have been displaced.

To give you a bit of perspective on that number, it is more than 3 times the number of Syrian refugees Canada has vowed to take in and help settle in communities across Canada. That process has happened over a wide time span.

In the evening when I sit and watch tv, I often sketch or doodle. Lately it's been spring scribbles to be used for thank you cards to give to art buyers. They are quick and fun to do, and the better ones may be used as inspiration for drypoint etchings.

After searching without success for a resource to do timed gesture drawings of animals, I decided to make my own for horse gestures. I'd love to do a dog one but don't have enough good photos of different dogs. Anyhow, I uploaded the video to Youtube to share.

I’ve been on a dog kick lately. Our whole family are dog people. I especially love the working breeds – hounds, spaniels, collies, and terriers; but really I haven’t met many dogs I didn’t like. With Coilean (11×14″, Oil on panel) I wanted to play with…

Introduction

Short Version:

I make pictures. Sometimes they are drawn, sometimes painted, sometimes photographed. The method is less important than the message.

Long Version:

I am a full time visual artists from Alberta, Canada. Although I was raised in the city, I spent as many of my weekends and holidays as possible with relatives in the ranching areas of the province where a deep love for western cultures and nature developed. Art was a major part of my life then. It was rare to see me without a sketchbook or camera.

I studied photography in the late 1980’s but then spent 14 years working in the fibre arts. It is the drawings and photography I did then that gave me the most pleasure and ultimately lead me to devote my practice to those mediums. My textile work helped shape my ideas on the use of colour, shape, and design in more abstract and symbolic terms.

Visual art is my journey where I explore the many aspects of life. There is the beauty of people represented with spirit, grace, strength, freedom and our connection to the land. The land filled with wonderment and magnificence, shows us our own insignificance. Sometimes, it’s just about the subtleness or simplicity of a beautiful thing, which we don’t acknowledge often enough.

I try not to copy nature exactly, but a sentiment that will allow you to connect with the represented spirit and create your own interpretations. It is my hopes these works will create an emotional response in you that goes beyond what is readily understood.

I find inspiration in the work of the impressionist’s, especially those of Dutch and Russian heritage. In 2009 I was juried in as a full member of the Alberta Society of Artists, which was an organization my great, great uncle Frederick G. Cross was a founding member of. In 2014 I was juried in as an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and in late 2014 as an active member of the Oil Painters of America. My work hangs in private and public collections around the world.
