I enjoyed delivering this presentation today. Social media isn't just about marketing messages and selling stuff, so I jumped at this chance to talk about how senior leaders need to get savvy about applying the power of these new technologies in the service of 'good for society' causes like combating corruption.
"Communicating with social media to make corruption obsolete: applying the technology of transparent times to inspire informed citizens" is the theme of this presentation which was delivered at Hong Kong to the 2015 Symposium of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC).

My best communications counsel for both clients and  governments is to proactively engage the online public as a source of new ideas to be openly shared.

Lenovo didn’t try to point the finger and blame someone else like some coward companies do when they lose their cool under similar circumstances. Lenovo expressed their company’s feelings using informal 'human' language in taking responsibility for what happened, with the same kind of refreshing candour which helps to restore trust in a hurry. It was really a textbook case of the right way to say sorry: "We messed up badly here. Our guys missed it. We’re not trying to hide from the issue – we’re owning it." Also, an apt Tweet from their CTO: http://bit.ly/1AHmILW.

This communications industry problem is especially acute at the most senior levels at agencies and client-side, where soaring social media rhetoric is often not matched by reality as leaders who don't 'get it' cannot grasp - through a lack of hands-on personal experience - what needs to be done, thus delaying or distorting or paralyzing essential social business transformation and investment
On the surface, the public relations industry seems to be doing just fine. Clients increasingly see PR as a more effective alternative to advertising and marketing. Agencies are making more money than ever, with global growth rising 11% in 2013, the most recently reported period.
