"We may have something to announce in the next few weeks". #notprovided #seo

Live Blogging of +Amit Singhal Keynote with +Danny Sullivan

Please note: all the below is paraphrasing, though I have done my level best to make the comments as accurate as possible!

Amit: Social signals, Twitter and Facebook "not coming into play right now".  Twitter, don't really have access to the data.  "Right now we don't.

Danny - not using G+ for non-personalized results?

Amit - friends comment on, or +1 something, of relevance for me.

Danny: why not use G+ for un-personalized results?  Use all the signals that improve the user experience.  For personalized signals, there is value (implied is that for non-personalized the answer is no, but was not stated).

Amit: Look at this a human problem. What signals bring those relevant documents higher in the rankings.  Links is one of them.

Danny: You say you are not using anything like an AuthorRank now. Why not use "AuthorRank" in the future.  Would it not add value?

Amit: Possibly it could. (Laughter, but Amit says no more about it).

Amit: Knowledge graph gives people answers right in the search results, and users get answers when they need them.

Danny: Will we get to a point in the future where all the answers are from the KnowledgeGraph?

Amit: Google is an amazing Swiss army knife.  However, sometimes you need to open a wine bottle.  Some genius added that.  That's an awesome thing.  Especially in a mobile world.

But sometimes you need to do more, and go back quite a bit deeper.

Danny: What about this tweet that Google is a scraper site?  It got 35,000 retweets?  More people upset about the unwritten contract with sites that they will send traffic back to them.

Amit: This is a great question.  Why we built Google.  Goal is to filter user's needs.  Please don't forget one thing.  If user's lose trust, they will use Google less.  We are building the product to meet user's needs.

Google thinks of itself as very symbiotic with an open web ecosystem.  But if Google loses the user's trust then sinking tides will sink all boats.

Danny: What about how sites fare in that?

Amit: The relationship between sites, users, and Google is one ecosystem, and we care deeply about that.  The Swiss army knife (Google) needs to adapt or the whole system breaks down, and everybody loses.

Danny: How does Google verify direct answers?

Amit: We are continuously pushing the envelope.  We return as many answers as we can with confidence.  At the same time, for other questions we will return the best answer that we know of, but there is no substitute for you doing your own verification.

Danny: Who is the boss of search?

Amit: Beautiful products are built when different areas collaborate.  With Google Now we take experts from many areas, search, knowledge graph, natural language search, speech recognition, etc.  This type of collaboration is essential.

Amit: There is a separation of church and state between ads and search.  Also believe in clear labeling whenever there is a paid relationship.

Danny: Is there a real competitor to Google?

Amit: What you observe as your competition today is one thing, but in this world of technology, things can change quickly.  We clearly have to keep our eye on the ball.  If we don't build products that users love, we will not succeed, and should not.  Have to make sure we keep doing right by users and the web ecosystems.

Danny: Why do advertisers get referrers (keyword data) and organic clicks do not?

Amit: Consider the recent plan crash scenario, where an advertiser could get flooded with clicks that they did not want, and that would not be right.  For organic search, people can get pretty good data from Webmaster Tools.  But, we are looking at the whole problem, and we may have something to announce in the next few weeks.

Danny: Google Now is both scary and give me more.  Automatically tells me when my flight is late. Tells me when my package from Amazon should arrive.  Is this already mainstream?

Amit: If you are using GMail, you should get Google Now.

Danny: How will change in 5 years?

Amit: Mobile is the big change, and hard to specify how, but it is likely to be very significant.

Pretty much over, and I am out of time!
