Middle class shrinks below 50% in Silicon Valley as 1%'s incomes rocket

http://usat.ly/1TEjENC

SAN FRANCISCO – The middle class is shrinking nationwide but with the boom in Silicon Valley, the region is seeing some of the starkest gaps anywhere, a report released Wednesday found. Here, fewer than 50% of households are now middle class and half of all income gains flowed to the top 1% of earners. At the same time, housing prices skyrocketed while incomes at the lower end of the spectrum were stagnant. The three county region of Santa Clara, San Mateo and San Francisco, home to employees from hundreds of tech companies including Facebook, Google and Apple, is a far more unequal place that it was a quarter of a century ago.The report, Inequality and Economic Security in Silicon Valley, was produced by the non-profit, non-partisan California Budget & Policy Center, based in Sacramento, Calif. It looks at income equality in Silicon Valley from 1989 to 2014, the last year for which full data was available.

Seriously considering a Prius but wondering how it will do in snow in NH. Does anyone have experience?

Given all of the fraud issues of late in the credit card/banking industry this is a bit disconcerting.

Well, when you put it that way...
"A multimillion-dollar security infrastructure, built and maintained by one of the world’s largest retailers ... was brought to its knees by a cheap software package created by a teenager using a common development language."

I'm really ticked at Ryanair for taking advantage of my daughter. They charged her $97 to print her boarding ticket -- and they were rude about it to boot. And get this -- she had a connecting flight and they wanted another $97 to print the second half of the ticket. The essense of their  reply to a letter of complaint: Drop dead. This is how we make money.

Remember when CPUs were so cool that PCs were named after them - and fat PC magazines did huge roundups of every last clone? Flashing back to the 386SX.

Like most entrepreneurs, high-tech publishing pioneer Wayne Green. who gave me and dozens of other aspiring journalists our start, was both an eccentric and a genius. Green passed away last Friday at 91  with just one regret. http://ow.ly/oWX1h
