Contemplating a Christmas party made me think of our interns over the summer. I really do miss them. (Please do not tell them though, they get soooo cocky!) Yes, I am inviting them.

He who has a thing to sell,
and goes and whispers in a well,
Is not as apt to get the dollars,
As he who climbs a tree and hollers!!!

My mother was a smoker and when I was a kid of 7 or 8 or so, she would by these packages with 50 or 100 books of matches in them. The matchbooks would each have a quote on them. Because she always had them lying around, I would read the quotes. Of all of them the only quote I remember is the one above. I cannot tell you why I remember that one, but it is as if even then I knew you had to make sure the world knew you were selling whatever you were selling.

Today, I use that quote a little differently, I say: "If you want to be heard, you gotta BEAT A drum!

Thanks to the drumBEAT team for making sure I remember this every day.

Avinash is more than cool. He is super cool.

"A  person once asked me, in a provocative manner, if I approved of homosexuality. I replied with another question: 'Tell me, when God looks at a gay person, does he endorse the existence of this person with love, or reject and condemn this person?"

"We must always consider the person. In life, God accompanies persons, and we must accompany them, starting from their situation. It is necessary to accompany them with mercy. When that happens, the Holy Spirit inspires the priest to say the right thing."

"The church's pastoral ministry cannot be obsessed with the transmission of a disjointed multitude of doctrines to be imposed insistently.”

"We have to find a new balance. Otherwise, even the moral edifice of the church is likely to fall like a house of cards, losing the freshness and fragrance of the Gospel."

Avinash is so bright and he sees the world in a way I enjoy (even the analytical world). As a guy who is not religious, I have to say this pope understands what is real and what is dogma. To reach out a hand to someone in need is much more important than to spend time condemning those who do not share our beliefs or values.

Saw this on TripWire (http://www.tripwiremagazine.com/2013/10/35-amazing-shadow-art-illusions.html) and had to share it. This is really cool. I love when people create something complex yet simple.

Shortly after we put up the fantastic Olympus Nelson Management website, they decided to be nice and give our friend her deposit, pro rata rent, etc. Funny how when people whose business model is taking advantage of those less likely to fight back get in the way of someone who will fight - they capitulate.
Unfortunately in some ways, we have been so busy it has been difficult to give the site the attention it needs. But, we are going to get busy making sure everyone who does business with them is able to fight back with easy to fill out AG complaints, TX real estate commission complaints, BBB complaints, etc. We even have a couple of attorneys who are big on helping the weaker in society.
This could turn into something about more than just Olympus Nelson tactics. So, stay in touch.

Story

There is no substitute for Family or Friends.
Introduction
Grew up in a Navy family, became a Marine, an RN, a business person. As much as I loved caring for people in a physical sense I think I was born to be an entrepreneur. From an early age I always had something going on with business. I enjoy the moments of waking up at 3 a.m. with an idea and having to get up and work on it.....It would be nice if I was always right given the sleep I sometimes miss!
One of the best business moves I have made in the last five or six years was to join a group of business people who are some of the smartest CEO's I know. I hope they let me keep hanging around.
Bragging rights
Never really thought about this until sitting in a Starbuck's waiting on an appointment. So... Try this on for size: Jumped off a bridge about 75 to 80 feet high into a river while in high school. Slept with Woody Harrleson (Yes I did! It was on a plane in first class and he was asleep next to me;). Here is another that I doubt many can top: Shot by a TX Highway Patrolman and lived! Point blank range and he hit me in both arms. Again, yes, it really did happen. Here is one that recently became poignant: My first rock concert was Iron Butterfly in Waco, TX at the Heart of Texas Coliseum. I had a poster I bought, was 13, and got it signed by Lee Dorman, the bassist. Just saw this weekend that Lee had died a few months ago. Funny how something like that can affect you.

Love and the Pursuit of Perfect SEO
OK, I went to McLennan Community College for Nursing School. I always hated school. I love learning, but there is just something about the setting that makes it near impossible for me. Interestingly, through my son being in Montessori since fifth grade, I have learned that there was likely a place I could have thrived in school, but that is life.

I just do not understand companies that need to spam to get business. These guys are on LinkedIn spamming people by checking they are the person's friend. Their only reason for trying to connect is they have to do this to business owners, etc. because no one is calling them to give them business. The one who spammed me was a bartender before working for them for 6-7 months. Then he was promoted to be over business development. Go figure. My experience is that companies that have to call you and convince you that you have a need, then come sell you on the need they tried to create, are usually companies that don't have much of value. Think siding, windows, investments, etc.

I do not leave a lot of reviews. I work in SEO and have many years. I read many SEO's and that somewhat of a subgroup, Local SEO experts. Andrew stands out as a doer and someone who is constantly learning and sharing the knowledge. He is working in Local every day so he understands the extreme nuance of it all. I was shown his blog by a friend I respect in Local and now I look forward to reading his musings. If you have a need in Local, you will not go wrong with Andrew Shotland.

My friend had a problem where some AC company had taken out two breakers and put in two pieces of copper. When he called MisterSparky, they knew he needed help right then and sent someone right out. Just have to like that kind of response.

We have a warranty through First American Home Buyers and were having trouble with our two dishwashers. They sent out a poor company to work on them and the "repairman" said nothing was wrong with them. They are Bosch dishwashers about 5 years old. When we complained they sent out Gulf Coast Service Center. (They are listed as serving Clear Lake and we are in Montrose.) The gentleman arrived as I was on a conference call and he began to work immediately. He pulled out a filter from one and cleaned it - seemed to say the last guy did nothing. He then went to work on the main problem of one. He was here for about an hour. Worked quietly and efficiently and finished about the time my call did. He stated that this dishwasher often has a problem with the board and he pulled it and did a repair on it until the new board would come in. The dishwasher was working like a charm. The other one just needed a slight tune-up and he was out of my hair. I have to say that Gulf Coast improved my opinion of the warranty company and made me put them in my contacts to call with any other appliance problem. They are pros and do what they say they will. I could not have been happier.

Was very impressed when a friend had an A/C problem that turned out to be electrical. He had called an A/C company and when they opened the outside A/C breaker box by the unit, instead of having breakers in it, the breakers had been taken and replaced by two pieces of copper pipe. He knew he had a big problem when the A/C man said he was not licensed to touch it and that it could burn up his home. There were already burned wires inside and that was why it was not working. We suggested he call Mr Sparky and the lady said she would have someone come out right away since it was an emergency issue. They showed up within an hour or two and fixed his problem, took pictures, etc. You could tell they cared.

1800 PackRat is a Pack Rat of a joke. I am in Houston, call about getting a container. First lady tells me they are closed for a week? Two days later after email from them I call back and someone else says they do not know where she got that info and set all up. Due to issue online, I did not get promised discount. Whatever. They arrive as stated and in talking with driver he says there is no way they can pick it up next day and I state I told them the day I set it up. He arranges to have someone call me and it gets done after some work. They pick it up and go. They have told me on phone just to give 24 hour notice to have delivered to new location. I call (Cannot get through EVER so you are forced to leave a number) and state have new home set and want delivery and they say when, I ask for 24 hours, lady hesitates so I capitulate and say 48 and she says, "Sir! the soonest I can schedule it is May 22nd (14 days)! Do you want to schedule it or not?!" Yes, that is where the attitude starts. I state that when I chose to use them I was told 24 hours and she says, "We are very busy do you want the 22nd or not?" Literally, that is how she was handling from the beginning. I stated that the 22nd would not work and I wanted them to do what they said when they sold me the service. She says, "Is there something else you need?" and I say, yes to speak with someone else as.... and auto hold goes on. I stayed on hold for 5 minutes to insure she had purposefully done it and I was right. I had the number in Houston, so I called that and got Clinton who apologized and told me it was not a franchise here that it was a company store. He agreed that he would see if he could get it done by Friday even though they are swamped, and would call me back. he never did. Today I called and he never answered. So, I have a new home and 800PACK RAT has my belongings and there is NO way to get them. DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE. They are HORRIBLY RUN. What a JOKE. Given the prices, you are better off paying a mover and storing and dealing with that process than to pay almost the same for a joke of a company to hold your belongings hostage. It is different for me in that I can go stay in a hotel, call the attorneys for my firm, etc. For someone who is Joe Good Guy trying to take care of his or her family, this would be insurmountable. They need to close down. If everytime I call you are having "high call volume" that means you do not want to hire more operators, customer service reps, etc. If every time I want the container picked up or delivered and you cannot deliver on your service promise, that means you do not have enough drivers, etc. I rarely give this type of review and I hate to do it, but I must let others know.

Dr. Loudat is that combination of a very competent, intelligent vet who truly cares about the animals he sees. A friend referred me to Westchase animal clinic for my dogs itching. He was the first vet with a grasp of the problem and how to solve it. Excellent doctor.
