Feeling that global sense of idealism? Check out Ustream, a live 24/7 view from the International Space Station
http://tinyurl.com/mgyw7ue
Live video from the International Space Station includes internal views when the crew is on-duty and Earth views at other times. The video is accompanied by audio of conversations between the crew and Mission Control. This video is only available when the space station is in contact with the ground. During "loss of signal" periods, viewers will see a blue screen. Since the station orbits the Earth once every 90 minutes, it experiences a sunrise o...

Celebrating my 1st paper 30 yrs ago this May: I was sole author, paper accepted with no revision in 29 days, and I still find the data interesting--the dissociation of Na-butyrate action (presumably through action as histone deacetylase inhibitor) on cell cycle arrest and transcription induction http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6203027
PubMed comprises more than 23 million citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books. Citations may include links to full-text content from PubMed Central and publisher web sites.

I find myself truly inspired once again by music.  Here, David Oistrakh, 1972, master violinist in every way; watch here the special bond between student & teacher (you don't have to speak Russian/German to understand everything here)... http://youtu.be/aPjR94QN8-Y?list=RDAtkk3PX50mc

Great discussion by Nathan Pearson.  Another point (discussion around 16:00) re: latin vs. germanic words in communication--scientists (and I'm really pointing at MD's) can have a tendency to hide behind jargon.  For MD's this may have been so they could talk about a patient at the bedside without the patient's understanding (something OK if with patient consent, but otherwise at risk of being demeaning).  For scientists communicating with scientists, there may be more precision, but it risks hiding ignorance behind jargon if not necessary & appropriate.

Introduction
Informal:
I'm a physician-scientist interested in RNA, HITS-CLIP, Neurologic disease, Neuro-oncology,

Formal:
Robert B. Darnell, M.D., Ph.D., is the Robert and Harriet Heilbrunn Professor of Cancer Biology at Rockefeller University in New York City and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Center. In November 2012 he was named President and Scientific Director of the NY Genome Center. His is also an active physician, both as Director for Science Programs at the Center for Clinical and Translational Research for the Rockefeller University Hospital, where he is Senior Physician, and at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in NY, where he is an adjunct Attending Neuro-Oncologist. Dr. Darnell is a leading expert in the study of paraneoplastic neurologic syndromes, rare disorders triggered by an immune system response to common cancers. His patient-oriented studies led him to discover that neurons have unique mechanisms governing the regulation of RNA, the transcribed copies of our genes.  He went on to pioneer the development of HITS-CLIP, a method to study RNA regulation in intact cells and tissues, now a gold standard being widely applied in neurobiology, cancer biology, immunology and virology, and to explore the “dark matter” of the human genome.  In 2010, Dr. Darnell was elected member of the Institute of Medicine, member of the Association of American Physicians and Fellow of the AAAS. Dr. Darnell currently serves on the Board of Scientific Councilors of the Jackson Laboratory and the NINDS Advisory Council, and among numerous awards, in 2012 received an NIH Directors Transformative Research Award.  In 2014 Dr. Darnell was elected as a Member of the National Academy of Sciences
