Could this be the opening salvo in Apple restricting smart watch capabilities to its' own product only?
Apple has apparently rejected a recent update to an app for declaring support for Pebble.

Yeah but was that really the only reason it was rejected?

Question:  Where does iOS get the info for the traffic for the notification center about where you are going? You know - the thing that says: "It would take you about XX minutes to drive to XXX".

I would think it was from the calendar, but it's not.  I think it pulls a work address and a home address.  But I don't know where that is set. Obviously in my own contact that has "me" next to it in Contacts, I have my home address.  But I don't have a work address.  So I'm wondering - when I' m home - how does it know I want to drive to work every morning? Is it just guessing based on my daily GPS activity?

The reason I am ultimately asking is that I am a contractor on a contract till 12/31. At that time I don't want it to show "it would take you 25 minutes to drive to City" because I won't be working there every day anymore.

Now - I know in Google Maps you can actually set a "work" address.  But I can't seem to be able to find it in iOS.

So folks - thoughts? Where does the info come from?

Sorry Rob I didn't mean to send this comment to you privately. Still getting used to this form. What I don't understand is why do I get traffic notification on my iPad but not on my iPhone six. The settings are the same

I have a 4th generation iPod Touch - which only runs up to iOS 6.  It is my main podcast and music listening device.  I regularly (almost every day) sync podcasts into it from iTunes.  I do NOT subscribe to podcasts in the Podcast app on it - I only sync from the PC.  It obviously - only being iOs 6 - does not have the latest Podcast app.

iTunes 11.2 just came out and I'm hesitant to upgrade - because everything it says is it is "optimized" for Podcasts 2.1 on the iOs devices.

Does anyone yet have experience -good or bad with 11.2 and an iOs 6 device?  Looks like lots of nice features on the iTunes side, but if it breaks my podcast syncing - that's a total deal breaker for me.

I'm still on iOS 6.x and haven't noticed any issues with latest iTunes and Podcast app (latest version still working). I'm syncing manually.

I thought I'd start a "Show us your homescreen" thread.  I always enjoy seeing others' homescreens - it often gives me new ideas for apps to download or wallpapers I might like.  Post either iPhone/iPod Touch or iPad.  I'll start with my iPad - I'm using a Star Trek fabric scan as my wallpaper.  I keep the dock pretty stock - and everything I use every day pretty well sits right up front. It's pretty well a media-consumption tool for me most of the time.  More unusual apps up front: Virtual Chrome - which is an awesome little app that creates a virtual session with the Chrome browser - this way if I need a full blow browser on the iPad for something I have it.  Also - SplashTop remotes me into my PC.  So folks - share your homescreens - would love to see them!

Hey Rob. I usually put a post on Techmusings.me every season showing my apps on both my iPhone and iPad. I usually give a bit of commentary of the apps that I move in to various homek screen slots. Here's my post for Winter 2013

So the past few weeks I've been having trouble with custom ringtones for contacts resetting to the default ringtone. This does not seem to be the disappearing ringtone bug because that bug was where ringtones would become deleted from the phone completely. I am on iOS 8.1.2. The ringtones are still on the phone, they just seem for the contacts using them to be reset to default. Any ideas folks? IPhone 5c 8.1.2.

I have a question about iOS apps and their downloaded space versus used space:

I went to download a game called Sentinels of the Multiverse.  The app store showed it as 255 MB.  I have a 16 GB iPad 4th gen.  I had about 800 MB free.  It stalled during downloads and gave me an out of space warning.

So my question is this - why would a game that says it is only 255 MB take up way more space?

I downloaded it on my PC through iTunes - and the game is 1.6 MB.  So - the small file - is that compressed and then it gets expanded by the iPad?  I'm not sure how this works.

I know there are some games that after you install download additional resources - but I've never encountered an app that says it's one size but then expands to another size before even being opened.

Do app devs have the ability to force an app to download other things during its initial install?  Anyone have other insight?  Thanks.

I just looked - the game takes up 1.6 MB - but like I said it only shows as 255 MB in the app store.  So it expands to over 6 times its' size? That seems crazy.

Ok folks  - looking for a bluetooth visor clip on speakerphone for the car.  Are there any that specifically support iOs?

I have one now - but I still have to pick up the phone and hold down the home button to activate Siri and give her a voice command.  Is there a bluetooth visor clip on speakerphone that I can essentially hold down a button on it, and activate her? Love to not have to take the phone out of the pocket in the car.

I use the S4 (True Handsfree) unit. The only thing I wish it had was the ability to relay sound to the car stereo like some other units. Sometimes when road noise is load (or you are talking to a really soft talker) it would be nice to be able to turn up the volume higher than the Blue Ant itself will go.

Hi folks - I'm an iPod Touch.iPad user.  Thinking about finally biting the bullet for an iPhone since Verizon has an amazing deal - free iPhone 5c 32 GB (you pay up front and get a $200 bill credit). I'd like to try and go relatively low on my data plan.

So my question is this - on the iPhone - is there a setting to force the iPhone to use Wifi for all data whenever connected on Wifi?  Obviously I have Wifi at home - and my cable company Cablevision has hotspots all around New Jersey and reciprocal agreements with COmcast and Time-Warner.  I've had my iPod Touch for so long instead of an iPhone because 90% of the time I'm out - I can find a hotspot from cable or an open one wherever I am.  So I'd love for the iPhone to hop on wifi whenever possible so I don't use a lot of data from the data plan.  Is there a setting for that or is it individual setting for each app?

Hi folks - iPad app was recently updated.Really don't like the new design/theme - it's very blah! It's boring,  too much like Reeder. Loved the circles, colorful look and feel of previous version, green flashes when sections were read. Any way you can integrate previous look as a theme? The fact that I after 1 minute of use I came right away looking to tell you about this should say something! Other echo this feeling in iTunes reviews.

yeah, i think this forum is just for the web experience, but i feel compelled enough to also chime in here. i think the designer has lost their way. both the UX and the visuals are a step backwards. i mean, you guys are killing your own brand. very strange.

for all platforms a huge problem has been lack of options. on iPad specifically now - there is a "swipe to next article" option - great. but, there is a new tap to next article behavior that is poorly implemented (i accidentally trigger it all the time = frustration) with no option to turn it off. bad UX there.

seriously, your designers seem to have lost their way. there needs to be one "brand lead" who defines the brand across all platforms. you've killed off your brand font much earlier, and now you've killed off your color. sad to something great decay this way.

Hey folks - curious what the best way to manage multiple devices with kids in the house. I'll be getting a new iPad for Xmas and my daughter will be getting my old one as a hand me down. I want her iPad to have access to apps purchased on my iTunes store account, but I also want her iPad to have its own ability to iMessage separately. When I wipe it - can I set her up with a new iCloud account? That can stay separate from the iTunes account correct?

Also - what parental controls do I need to turn in, if any? She won't have my iTunes password so she won't be able to make app purchases -(the iPad is first gen which asks for the iTunes password at every purchase).

Thanks in advance for any info you have to share!

Yes set her up her own iTunes account but everyone uses the same account to pay. We have 4 iPhones and 3 iPads on and it works great.

If you have insurance, check with them to see if they will accept it before you walk in the door. I have insurance - they are listed on my provider's website. However - I had my eye exam elsewhere. I walked in to get glasses, and when I told them this, they said they would only take my insurance for glasses if I was actually a patient who had an exam there. It is their office policy, so even though they are listed as a provider for my insurance, they said it was too difficult to work with me just for glasses. A caution to others on this service provider.

Decided to try BJs optical as we were tired of going to our regular optician at the eye doc and paying high prices for glasses. They were having a 50% off all glasses sale and the prices were very, very good. I have progressive lenses and this would be my second pair of progressives. Progressives must be measured properly for something called "seg height" - which determines how high the reading prescription sits on the glasses. My first pair of progressives were excellent and I adjusted to them with ease. So I picked out a set of frames comparable in size to my old ones. I got standard progressives, with the Anti-glare coating and polycarbonate lenses. They do also offer HD progressives which are newer technology and allow a wider "channel" in which to see - aka you don't have to be looking so close to the center to have a sharp clear image. I was very specific about asking how they measure the height - asking what he uses to do this. He did NOT use a ruler to set up the height - he stated he uses a standard height that is comfortable for most people. This I believe was a BIG mistake and I should have stopped him there but I trusted him. So I placed the order and with what I ordered - my glasses were approx. $190 - this is an excellent price - and is truly 50% of what my glasses cost before at my original optician. So when I got the glasses in - I put them on and immediately felt they were not right. Looking straight ahead - the lower portion of my distance vision and the outer edges had a definite blur to them. The gentleman there attempted to adjust this by saying he could bend the sides of the glasses at the temples down to adjust the height a bit. He did this a few times. When he was done, the glasses were not perpendicular to my face, the bottom of the lenses were just about touching my face. I think there was a good 15 degree angle on them. He said I should give them a try and I would get used to them. I got in my car, and immediately I could tell they were still not right. Because of the angle of the lens, images were distorted, and when sitting behind a car at a stop light the license plate in front of me was still blurry. At home the bottom of the TV was blurry. I knew this was not right. I checked with two other opticians about the adjustments he made, and how to determine the height of the prescription. They both told me very minor angle adjustments are OK, but they seemed to think the seg height was definitely wrong. I took them back. He had no problem with changing the height and having them redone. I picked up my new glasses a week later, and the height seems to be right, and they feel good. So - bottom line - price - great, quality of glasses - seems to be comparable to others, but service wise - I feel like the gentleman at this store definitely did not measure me properly, and he attempted to compensate for his mistake by making poor adjustments. To his credit - he did not have a problem having them redone, and the other gentleman who was there when I picked up the second time was very nice and dealt with me just fine since I was only really picking up good glasses anyway. Overall - decent but not great. I might go back, but I think next time I will spring for the extra $100 for the higher end "HD" lenses.
