When we bailed out the financial sector, the usual suspects went on about how this showed that the "free market" is fundamentally flawed. The twisted logic of such a claim aside, shouldn't those same people now be claiming that government is fundamentally flawed? Where is the clamor to dismantle flawed governments? #economics   #politics   #us

"Older players, though slower, seem to compensate by employing simpler strategies and using the game's interface more efficiently than younger players, enabling them to retain their skill, despite cognitive motor-speed loss."

"For example, older players more readily use short cut and sophisticated command keys to compensate for declining speed in executing real time decisions."

So that's why old people use emacs...

Here's a nice tool to test for the CVE-2014-0160 #OpenSSL  vulnerability. (I'm not saying I missed restarting one service after upgrading, but...) #security

I've enjoyed eating here for over two decades. As far as I know, the Ejchorszt family has owned this Dairy Queen franchise since it opened in the late 80s, and it's just about the only fast food franchise I know that has something like the feel of a family-run restaurant. Sometimes quality suffers a bit around the beginning or end of a summer, when schedules and personnel change. But most of the time the service is excellent and so is the food.

I'd stayed away from Royal Buffet after a bad experience several years ago, but a friend recommended I give them another try and now I've been a regular customer again for about a year. Yes, this is a buffet, with the kind of generic entrees you'd find in most Chinese take-out restaurants in the US. There are also a few American entrees and a decent selection of fruit, pudding, pastries, and ice cream. If you go during the peak lunch or dinner hours (the place is huge and I've never had to wait long to be seated), the food is fresh. The food tends to sit in the steam table and overcook when business is slow, so at mid-afternoon some of the entrees may not be very appealing. There's enough variety that I can always find something I like, but this is why I rate the food only "Very Good". The buffet also includes all-you-can-eat sushi--nothing exotic, but with several varieties to choose from. As with the other food, the sushi is not as fresh at off-peak times. But, really, it's about as good as you have any right to expect from a Chinese buffet. I've had much better sushi, but not at this price. Finally, there's a Mongolian barbecue style setup that's also included with the buffet. I've never tried it, but it seems to be popular at dinner time. At the very least, I'd expect this option to be fresh any time of day. You get all this for about $7 at lunch and $10 at dinner. So, even though Royal Buffet may not be a reason to drive to Willimantic, it's well worth a stop if you're already there.

If you're looking for both good pizza and a wide selection of beers, Two Brothers is definitely worth investigating. I particularly enjoy their Reuben pizza--exactly what it sounds like, Swiss cheese and all--which I've never seen at other local restaurants. My only complaints are that the booths aren't terribly comfortable and the prices are on the high side for pizza.

I've rarely been disappointed with the sushi here. Don't be fooled by the unassuming exterior: inside there's a good atmosphere, consistently good service, and possibly the best sushi in eastern CT.

The take-out pizza we ordered was greasy (though, to be fair, this was probably because there was too much sausage--at least they didn't skimp). The cheese on our toasted grinder was completely melted and it was dripping out of the grinder (even though the grinder was barely toasted). The bread was soggy, too. We ended up throwing out half the pizza and part of the grinder. I hadn't ordered from Sunset Pizza in years, and it will probably be years before I return. That's too bad, because the restaurant still seems to be a friendly neighborhood joint, and I would have returned to eat there sometime if the food were better.
