So you say you're a vegetarian or vegan for moral reasons, because plants don't suffer? Well, actually, they do.
Experiments carried out last year by researchers from the University of Missouri demonstrated that plants can not only sense when they're being eaten, but can even take chemical countermeasures to try to prevent it from happening.
While this may or may not constitute pain as we animals understand it, it is clear enough that this is a form of suffering, and that the plants don't enjoy it anymore than we would.
There may be exceptions to this, as the research was only carried out on a single species, the thale cress (a relative of broccoli). It seems unlikely, for example, that fruits mind being eaten, as very often their purpose is precisely to be eaten to spread seed through droppings.
Nonetheless, this should give pause to anyone making the moral argument for not eating animals. Just because you can't see or hear something suffering, doesn't mean that it isn't.
