I've put forward a session for Podcamp Toronto.  The gist of it will be that the most important metrics for marketing efforts on Facebook are not going to be found in the number soup of Insights.

My take on the clip is that he is not saying that 3.5 billion people in poverty is good.  What he's saying is that the ability for people to be able to generate so much wealth is 'fantastic news'.  I don't know if I'd call it fantastic, but good on 'em.  They are welcome to their wealth.

Two things to keep in mind.  First is that the 85 are not sitting on this money, Uncle Scrooge money bin style.  That money is tied up in the value of the companies they founded or have come to own.  This very service that we're watching this clip and discussing comes from two of the 85.  So instead of thinking opulant naked pillow fight party on a yacht - think of the hundreds of thousands of jobs that these 85 have made possible.

Second, because I have something doesn't mean I took anything away from you.  Did the founders of Google go roaming around Africa, stealing pennies from poor people in order to generate their billions?  John has a trillion dollars.  Bill has one dollar.  These are two unconnected facts that people tend to lump together through emotion.  All of us Charlies look at John and think he ought to give some of that money to Bill.  And maybe John does and maybe he doesn't but you know it's not Charlie's money to give so rather than toss stones at John this guy simply said "fantastic John!  Good for you for having all that money"

Ugh - I can tell you that I am up to here with temperatures in the sub 20s and 30s.  You get to a point where the chill just sticks to you like glue and no matter what you do you can't warm up again.  The temp today is supposed to rise to a balmy 6 degrees Celsius so at the very least we will lose the sheets of ice that have covered the sidewalks and parking lots.

In theory, the income can not be made unless capital was invested to provide for the endeavour.  If you don't sink about $500-750k into a building, supplies and equipment, then there is no Applebees for the waitress to work at and earn that income.

It also needs pointing out that there is nothing in the world stopping the Applebees waitress from participating in the markets. Everyone is welcome to participate in capital gains, not just 'rich people'.  Even back in the years when my salary was under $30k a year, I've been saving and investing for long term growth.  The favourable tax rates on dividends and capital gains played a role in my being able to do that.

A shame.

The video is well made.  Some strong storytelling of some youth slipping responsibility in order to enjoy a day in the sun.  Cut it at a certain moment and it would totally be a tone poem for friendship and young love.

Then comes the shocking twist.  It is sudden.  It is graphic.  It is most certainly not safe for public television.  But it is wasted.  Slapping a fake 'hey kids - stay in school' message does not provide the level of comedy that the ad agency was aiming for and all in all it becomes a vanity project for an agency that almost certainly 99.9% of viewers have never heard of and will not remember.  It will win awards and be talked about in industry circles and will occasionally resurface after this initial viral surge, but that's all it will be.

Had the producers played it straight, and put the message in support of something real ... like http://www.icbl.org as the most obvious choice ...they could have done more than driven shares and views and actually moved people to seek positive change.  What a waste.

I missed snapping a pic of the black smoke a few minutes earlier.  When you get close it's clear https://vine.co/v/MBOHJhrTwB9  ...but that would require going outside.  Brrrrrrr.

Of course the real question that no one's asking about #DoctorWho   is what will Murray Gold's music for the next Doctor be like? The last theme just absolutely screamed 'madcap adventure'... at the 30 second mark, when you heard that higher toned 'bah da bah bah da da dee dum bah da bah bah da dum dee dum' you knew you were in for a fun ride. Will it get all willowy choral again, like for nine/ten http://youtu.be/HyIP5nrJ8gY or will it get majestic and grand like This is Gallifrey http://youtu.be/k-SBNgu1hO4 or are we in for something absolutely new?

I had the honour and joy of helping out The Shoebox Project as part of Edelman's annual Little Give.  One of the things I love about The Little Give is that it's not just the company issuing a big novelty size cheque on behalf of us all.  It's not the donating of items like with a food drive.  And it's not even the rolling up the sleeves and donating of time.  What I love about the Little Give is that it's us donating our minds.  Take a room of the smartest and brightest PR practitioners and throw them together and it is absolute magic what these teams are able to produce in 48 hours that will have ongoing and lasting value for the charities.

Introduction
I am a storyteller. Time was, I used pen and ink on paper to tell stories through words and pictures, but that was a long while ago.

Currently my medium is in facts, data and information.  I weave together tales that help brands understand the impact of their public relations efforts.  I measure the intangible and give it form through charts and graphs and tables so that corporations can better use their PR and marketing dollars.
