Many people mistakenly believe that a server is no different from a typical desktop computer. This couldn't be further from the truth. While almost any computer that meets the minimum hardware requirements can run a server operating system that alone does not make a desktop computer a true server. Even if the desktop computer had similar processor speeds, memory and storage capacity compared to a server, it still isn't a replacement for a real server. The technologies behind them are engineered for different purposes.
The primary difference between a server CPU and a regular CPU is that a server CPU has more cores. A server CPU can be loosely described by saying that it is just two or three high end desktop CPU's slapped together. Server CPU’s also tend to run at lower clock speeds, because they generate a lot more heat then a regular CPU
A desktop computer system typically runs a user-friendly operating system and desktop applications to facilitate desktop-oriented tasks. In contrast, a server manages all network resources. Servers are often dedicated (meaning it performs no other task besides server tasks). Because a server is engineered to manage, store, send and process data 24-hours a day it has to be more reliable than a desktop computer and offers a variety of features and hardware not typically used in the average desktop computer.
Desktop class processors are meant to handle everything from simple music play to intensive tasks like graphics rendering,scientific research related softwares such as MatLab,etc. The importance here is to run everything by the same desktop CPU(!).
Server processors ,on the other hand,are meant to be doing a same type of task for hours and hours and hours! They need to running 24/7 throughout year. Imagine a day when you wake up to check your Facebook and suddenly the site goes down. Nobody likes a site which goes down frequently. To avoid that, the websites which rely on servers must have a good quality processor. That is why , server processors are way too expensive and last longer without a single hiccup. It does not matter whatever amount of workload you assign it.
