I want to take the world apart and figure out how it works.
Introduction
For the foreseeable future as our population increases we are going to be continuously progressing towards various Malthusian type catastrophes; be it shortage of food, land, or energy. The solution to any of the above problems is to keep technology advancing at a rate that outpaces those checkpoints. In the past there have been numerous defining moments where this has already happened; the agricultural and industrial revolutions are two of the most widely known sociocultural events that propelled mankind ahead by centuries.

While not as extreme, the Architectural industry isn’t immune to such crises as currently energy efficiency and reducing a building’s Carbon footprint are at the forefront of society’s concerns.

One constant that will always remain is the fact that new buildings require the consumption of raw materials (wood, steel, concrete etc.) in order to be created; this practise alone will be hard to turn sustainable. In addition to that, the manufacturing processes required to create the useable building materials from the raw ingredients must be taken into account. For the material to be considered completely sustainable, the technology used to create said product must also be powered by a green energy source.

Regarding the energy required to maintain a building’s indoor environment, that is a different challenge and one that I think will be easier to conquer in the coming years. Advancements in building science along with improved building envelope construction will significantly reduce the energy required to sustain a comfortable atmosphere. Ground source heat systems, greywater recycling systems, active solar technologies and wind turbines, will all continue to become more affordable - thus reducing and eventually eliminating a building’s energy intake during its operating lifetime.

In order to advance the structures we create past the resource and energy consuming entities that they currently are we need to continuously incorporate advancing technologies and find innovative ways to reuse existing materials.
