The Route 1/130 Traffic Circle Replacement Project. Some may remember the infamous "Route 1 Traffic Circle". (The intersection of routes 1 and 130 in US zipcode 08902. Use historical imagery in Google Earth to compare the past with today.) The site of many crashes and forever-snarled traffic, its fate had been the subject of local and state debate for at least fifty years before it was finally replaced. That replacement was one of the largest road projects the township had ever seen. On June 2, 2002 I wandered around the project with a camera. It was Sunday so I was able to walk around freely - well, mostly.

In recent years I've had the pleasure of working closely with kids at the high school level, many of them bound for further education and eventual careers in engineering. Their boundless optimism and enthusiasm is really something to see, but it might not be fully grounded in reality when it comes to today's world of work.

From around the 80s onward, I witnessed firsthand the continued erosion of the relationship between corporate America and its skilled workers. IT and software engineering was/is my game but there's no difference, really, between that and the 'harder' engineering trades.

This article presents an excellent treatment of the history of engineering work over the past several decades. There are plenty of good links to follow and dig deeper.

Oh, it's certainly not all doom and gloom, not by a long shot. But STEM education isn't the guarantee of a lifetime of employment, personal fulfillment and financial security that the mainstream news might have one believe.

"The social contract between STEM workers and employers that used to exist has long been broken, and is never coming back. Instead of being mainly enticed into a comfortable, secure career in engineering by what civil engineer Samuel Florman calls the existential pleasures of engineering, salary has now become the primary carrot because there is no such thing as a comfortable STEM career."

"Some 92 percent of the engineering class of 1978 found jobs and were working in the field of their bachelor’s degree (or one closely aligned to it) two years later; only 68 percent of the engineering class of 2006 could claim having the same opportunity. There are likely even fewer opportunities available for the engineering class of 2013."

The final paragraph is probably the clearest reflection of today's reality that I've seen in a long time. And some of the comments are gold.

I've had an on-and-off fascination with typography for a long time. This, to me anyway, is quite a departure from what I usually think of when someone mentions font design. These characters literally drip awesomeness!

Hey +Jonathan Schwarz, have you seen this?

Earlier today at OB's Restaurant & Lounge at the 12th Annual Russ & Bob's Panhead/Shovelhead Party.

I just want to go on record as saying I love Florida! Had a great time out there today with friends. Beautiful weather for riding; amazing old iron to admire; live music; cold beer; free BBQ. What's not to like?

You're not doing this in New Jersey in the middle of November.

Interesting, but not unexpected.

What caught my eye is how the analysis took place before the reporting was done and the repair was developed and deployed. But I don't think I could have resisted the urge to see either.
