The more I get closer to the smoothieboard, the more I am amazed by the quality of the documentation. When you need an ecosystem where you don't need to tinker with bazillions versions and interdependent #defines or lack of memory, then this is real stuff :)
Example? On linux, the doc even gives you copy/paste udev rules to have the smoothieboard recognized in its own class.
PS: yep we're now switching our (so far half-) printer to smoothie after an amazing number of issues with our existing printers and marlin (gods were all against us for the last two days, what a pity!). I wish it soon runs so it can print its own missing parts.
The board is costly and not perfect feature-wise, but what a smooth and refreshing change, thanks +Arthur Wolf for all this work! I hope and expect we'll keep on enjoying the journey so far :)

The out the front switchblade - a tough nut to crack, so I made a 2X wooden prototype to see how well it would work.

http://xyzbots.com/gcode-optimizer/

This uses a Genetic Algorithm for optimizing the traveling salesman problem for G0 (linear moves) commands in GCODE.

Simply upload a GCODE file and click Start/Restart, the program will loop and further optimize the hops between G0 points. When you are happy with the results, click Stop/Continue and then you can click Save Optimized GCODE to save the optimized file.

The program expects G0 commands to only happen above the material (when there is no cut happening).

It probably does not make sense to use this tool if you are cutting completely through the material unless you are using tabs on the outer cut of an object. Millcrum is a CAM tool which will add tabs to the path.

It was created by Andrew Hodel in 2015 based on the code cited in the paper (pdf) explaining the algorithm. There are some other projects that may interest you at http://xyzbots.com

Chiseling some mortices tonight and, although I did everything in my power to be precise, I had to keep telling myself that video must be very kind to The Woodwhisperer ;) ...because my mortices, although nice, do not compare to Marc's work. Kudo's Marc! I will keep watching, practicing and perfecting...

Why did it take so long for this simple heating/cooling problem to be solved? Our current thermostats remind me of the crappy cell phones we put up with before Apple enlightened us with the iPhone. The Nest is made by Tony Fadell, the idea man behind the iPod. Very cool tech! http://nest.com
