Tip 14/50: SEO Your Google+ Posts
Google+ posts are treated as individual web pages and as such you can SEO them for more visibility in the search results

For those of you unfamiliar with SEO, it is the practice of optimising websites and pages so they are more likely to show in Google search results in favourable positions for relevant search terms which means more visibility and more traffic.

As Google+ posts feature in the search results, I thought today I would talk about how you can improve the chances of YOUR posts being seen outside of Google Plus - Why? Because more visibility means more views which means more engagement which leads to good things :)

Typically every web page has a unique title and description as well as a body of content. These are they key things you can optimise for a website and it is very similar to a Google+ post. When posting try to follow these rules:

► Create a post title blending keyword usage with readability and attractiveness. Make your title Bold and aim to keep it <60 characters (including spaces) otherwise the end will be truncated (cut off). This will form the clickable blue link in the search results and is one of the most important SEO elements.
► Include an intro line or two after the title which will likely form your description (the dark text paragraph in the search results). Again, try and include one or two keywords. This tends to get truncated at around the 130-140 character mark.
► Use your keyword (and variations) throughout your post where possible and include relevant hashtags.

There are several elements that help a standard webpage rank in the search results which, for good measure I recommend you apply to your G+ post - However, I am unaware of any research that supports/proves my following suggestions:
► If uploading an image, consider using keywords in the image file name
► If uploading a your own video from YouTube consider optimising the video (more info here: http://bit.ly/XVCuQq)
► Do everything in your power to attract links and engagement (+1s, shares, etc) to your post as these positive signals will likely improve your post's authority (importance) and therefore, search ranking
► Plus-mention influencers in your posts (only where relevant) to encourage them to interact with your post. Each individual has their own personal authority and it stands to reason that signals from influential users will carry more positive weight than standard users
► Link out to relevant websites/pages which support your post/message. Google can make the connection between the two entities which can give additional relevancy signals.
► Embed your post on relevant sites/blogs. This embed acts as a link which adds authority to your post. The more embeds, the more authority.
