Tip 22/50: Don’t Give Up At The First Hurdle
Do more than just JOIN Google+ ...USE Google+!

I've wanted to write a post on sticking through the early, quiet days and not giving up on Google+ too early for a while but haven't managed to find the right words. Enter +Pepper Oldziey

I read her recent post (cleverly named "I'm not afraid of no G+Hosts" - read it here: http://bit.ly/1kYxvjg) today and it just fitted perfectly. The truth is, many people sign up to Google+ because they think they have to or they are interested in finding out more about the platform.

They arrive. They go through the motions of adding a tag line, photo etc (usually the bare minimum) and then expect the magic to happen. As Pepper mentions, it's not like Facebook where you can start talking to your friends - they aren't here yet so what now?

An empty stream and no familiar faces is a pretty sad existence.

So here's how you enhance your experience...

1. Sort out your hovercard - do yourself a favour and make yourself look interesting to others (more info: http://bit.ly/KH06cx)
2. Share other people's content, build upon it and mention them (more info: http://bit.ly/1fcwOvz)
3. Join communities for subjects that interest you and start asking/answering questions and interacting with people (more info: http://bit.ly/KH5rAG)
4. Start following people who interest you. They might follow you back! You can do this by looking through your stream, in communities or searching hashtags of interesting topics (e.g. #snowboarding  or #photography )
5. Bring friends over from other social platforms by linking to G+ posts or emailing them (more info: http://bit.ly/1mGTlGn)
6. Post regularly. Links, photos, quotes, articles, tips, mentions, questions. Anything!

Don't get bored and disheartened.

As you start playing around with G+'s features and interacting with people you will start to see what I see, and that's a platform that trumps every other platform in all sorts of ways. That's when you know you have jumped that first hurdle - best of luck.

Thanks in advance to +Pepper Oldziey (I hope you don't mind me borrowing your idea and some of your words!). Please go and check out her article in full (http://bit.ly/1kYxvjg) - its a great read, especially for beginners!
