Owen and Linda Golay, both members of the Marion County, Iowa, Republicans' central committee, pulled the GOP's parade float behind their truck, from which they hung three Confederate flags. Canada Court Rules Equality Trumps Religious Liberty

Ontario Supreme Court upholds law society’s right to deny accreditation for the Evangelical Christian Trinity Western University.

The Ontario Superior Court has slammed Trinity Western University’s controversial Community Covenant in a decision upholding the Law Society of Upper Canada’s refusal to accredit its planned law school.

After a four-day hearing last month, the three-justice panel said Thursday in a unanimous and stinging 41-page ruling that the mandatory pledge forces lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people to   “disavow not only their beliefs but … their very identity.”

“We use the words discrimination and discriminatory in this context intentionally,”   they emphasized.

“Despite some efforts by TWU to contend that the Community Covenant does not operate in a discriminatory fashion, it is self-evident that it does.”

Victoria's Chinatown - The Oldest In Canada

The first Chinese immigrants came to Victoria in 1858 because of  the gold rush.  None of them intended to stay permanently in Canada.  They figured on striking it rich and going back to China.  Some did – most did not.  Initially, they set up tents and shacks along a ravine, now Johnson St., and as more Chinese people arrived, the community expanded to include stores, tailor shops, theatres and schools.  By 1880, Victoria’s Chinatown formed the largest Chinese Community in all of Canada.

This area was operated as a separate town. The Chinese originally referred to it as "Huabu" meaning "Chinese Port", unlike non-Chinese people who called the same area "Chinatown". Eventually the name "Chinatown" was adopted by both the Chinese and non-Chinese communities in Victoria.

Chinatown's “Fan Tan Alley” was a network of alleyways and courtyards hidden behind the street fronts. It is undoubtedly the most famous place in Chinatown and for years was known as “The Forbidden City” and was open only to Chinese people. Among other things, it housed gambling and opium dens that featured elaborate escape routes in case of police raids.

Chinatown today is a great place to shop for fresh vegetables and fruit from local farms.  Delivery trucks still pull up to the curb and unload their produce right on the sidewalk in front of the stores.  If there’s no curbside parking, the truck drivers just park right in the middle of the street.  The police never seem to interfere in this, preferring to let the locals figure it out.

Many historic buildings have been well preserved in Chinatown and the district is a designated National Historic Site.

Our Daily Hike Around Cobble Hill Quarry Lake

Just a 5 minute drive from home our favourite place to take our pup Rylie for a hike each day is the Cobble Hill Quarry Lake.  The walk around the lake takes about an hour.

It's also a great place for swimming in the summer as the water is crystal clear.

Latino Leaders To GOP:  Dump The Trump

Hispanic leaders are bristling at the largely tepid response by Republican presidential candidates to Donald Trump's characterization of Mexican immigrants as rapists and drug dealers.

Several 2016 contenders have brushed off Trump's comments while others have ignored them. Marco Rubio, a Florida senator who is Hispanic, denounced them as "not just offensive and inaccurate, but also divisive," after declining for two weeks to address the matter directly. Another Hispanic in the race, Ted Cruz, said Trump is "terrific," ''brash" and "speaks the truth."

Bill Gates Aims To Save 61 Million Lives In Next 15 Years

"When it comes to saving and improving lives, investing in health provides an amazing return—the best I have ever seen."

"Since 1990, we have cut in half the percentage of children who die before the age of 5 (from roughly 10 percent to 5 percent). I am optimistic that we can cut it in half again by 2030. That would prevent the deaths of at least 61 million children".
