Interesting article on theriac and mithridatium, two ancient poison antidotes and panaceas that led to the early regulation of medicines in London in the 1550s and 1600s. Theriac Venezian is still a key ingredient in the Swedish Bitters formula.

A king’s quest to protect himself from poison led to an explosion of expensive potions that were prescribed for every ailment—until officials began reining them in.

Many herbal supplements shown not to have the herbs claimed on the label, according to New York's Attorney General. It is incredible that major retailers such as Walmart, Walgreens and Target are selling fake products with no trace of the herbs claimed to be in the products. As we always say, it is smarter and cheaper to make your own herbal remedies.  You can easily make your own teas and tinctures from dried herbs so you'll know that you really do have what's on the label! Better yet, make your own herbal remedies from herbs grown in your garden.

Here is a New York Times article on this story:
New York Attorney General Targets Supplements at Major Retailers
(http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/02/03/new-york-attorney-general-targets-supplements-at-major-retailers/)

And here is the sidebar to the story that shows what was found in the products:
What’s in Those Supplements? (http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/02/03/sidebar-whats-in-those-supplements/).
New York’s attorney general said that tests on popular store brands of herbal supplements at Walmart, Walgreens, Target and GNC found that roughly four out of five of the products contained none of the herbs listed on the labels.

Here's a great article in the New York Times on the importance of ethnobotany in the fight against antibiotic resistant bacteria:

One researcher thinks the drugs of the future might come from the past: botanical treatments long overlooked by Western medicine.

Hangover-free Alcohol?
North Korea claims that it has come up with an alcoholic beverage that won't cause hangovers.  They say it is based on a special type of Korean ginseng that they grow and on glutinous rice. We can believe that herbs such as ginseng can help mitigate the effects of alcohol, but eliminate a hangover altogether?  Hmmm...

Hydroponic Hops!
We never thought it would be commercially possible to grow hops in greenhouses, but a Colorado grower aims to show, yes, it's possible.   Interesting article in Inside Grower:

Hallelujah! Scientists discover that a 1,000 year old herbal remedy can kill drug resistant bacteria.  At Richters, the history of herbs is not just a collection of quaint stories about how herbs were used in the past to treat medical problems, it is a guidebook for rediscovering powerful medicines that we can use today.  The recent discovery that garlic and onion combined with bile from a cow, wine and copper can kill drug resistant bacteria is a perfect case in point.  None of these by themselves were as powerful as the combined remedy.  This really makes you wonder how remedies like this were discovered a thousand years ago without the benefit of labs, controlled studies, etc.  Here is one of many articles that were published about the discovery: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/03/30/1374416/-Doctors-claim-1-000-year-old-home-remedy-may-be-modern-day-cure-for-antibiotic-resistant-superbugs.  For those with medical or science training, here is the abstract of the presentation on the work at the annual conference of the Society of General Microbology held recently in the UK (search for "1,000-year" to find the abstract): http://www.sgm.ac.uk/download.cfm/docid/68CFC1F1-468B-4D3A-8C1A88E06BAAC16F.

How Hot Peppers Can Ease Pain.  Scientists learn how hot peppers help to relieve pain such as neuralgia and muscle and joint pain. The active constituent, capsaicin, has long been known to cause the heat sensation in hot peppers, but it also causes a numbing effect that is employed in topical pain creams.  Here is an account of the ground-breaking study that looked at the mechanisms involved at the ion channel level:
