Chapel Hill is my community.  Here are my thoughts about the events of this week.
You can imagine our concern as we hurriedly texted our son Preston, who is a senior at UNC-Chapel Hill, and our relief in discovering that he was alive and well. That relief never came to the parents of UNC dental student Deah Shaddy Barakat or the parents of his wife Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha ...

A different way to look at getting organized. . .
Happy new year! Every year, I do the same thing. I'm not a big maker of formal resolutions. I don't sit down and write out my goals. But just the same, every year I resolve to do a few things better than I did last year. And every year, my greatest hope is to be more organized.

Here's a tour of my home all dressed and ready for Christmas!
On the front door is my wreath. I've always admired wreaths made of noble fir, but find them too pricey. This year I bought 4 feet of noble fir garland and wired it onto an artificial wreath. I added berries, pine cones, and a bit of ribbon. Presto! A noble fir wreath for a fraction of the cost!

DIY "Joy" sign
As I considered how I wanted my front door to look this Christmas, I knew I wanted to add something special.  When I was window-shopping recently, I saw a beautiful sign "Joy" sign.  I loved it, but it cost nearly $100, which was more than I needed to spend...

As I think about all the people heading home for the holidays this week, I can't help but reflect on Thanksgiving 15 years ago--when my mom died.
"Oh, there's no place like home for the holidays. . . " That's always been one of my favorite songs. I guess it's a Christmas song, but for me it's one that I happily start singing even before Thanksgiving. I grew up in Tennessee, so I always loved these lines: I met a man who lived in Tennessee ...

In the midst of an especially busy week, I want to remember what the week is all about!
The days are flying by so quickly. It seems that Halloween was just yesterday, yet here we are at Thanksgiving week! If you're like me, you'll have a busy week. I'm preparing to host our annual Thanksgiving feast, and I'm so excited! But in all the preparations, I don't want to forget what this ...

As we begin this Valentine's Day week, here's a valentine for your soul.
Valentine's Day is this week, so naturally our thoughts turn to love. In our hectic lives, though, we may find that our minds are completely occupied with how we're decorating or what we're hoping to receive as a Valentine's Day remembrance or how we're going to make sure that our children have ...

Need something to warm your heart this Christmas?  You must see this video!
100 years ago, World War I was underway. Several decades of economic, political, and territorial conflicts among the great European powers had paved the way for a clash of forces made worse by a complicated system of alliances that drew more and more nations into the fray.

I created a huge JOY sign for my front porch.  I'm so happy with how it turned out! It's an easy DIY project with big impact.

Advent: Hope

Today is the beginning of the Advent season, which starts with the Sunday of hope. It would appear that hope is rather thin on the ground these days. With all the unrest in our world, and most recently the latest chapter in the story of Ferguson, Missouri, things can seem pretty hopeless.

Introduction
Child of God, apprentice to Jesus, wife of a great guy, and mom of three wonderful sons, I'm a blessed and profoundly grateful woman. I'm also a writer and speaker, and I serve on the Ministry Team and Board of Directors of Renovare', a ministry dedicated to Christian spiritual formation.

I love blogs for the glimpses they provide into people's lives, so my blog gives you a glimpse into my life--my home, my family, my faith. My prayer is that this blog might impart some grace to you.
