Engineers have now developed the first light-sensitive molecule that enables neurons to be silenced noninvasively, using a light source outside the skull. This noninvasive approach could pave the way to using optogenetics in human patients to treat epilepsy and other neurological disorders.

We are all familiar with that uncomfortable feeling in our stomach when faced with a threatening situation. By studying rats, researchers have been able to prove for the first time that our ‘gut instinct’ has a significant impact on how we react to fear. An unlit, deserted car park at night, footsteps in the gloom. The heart beats faster and the stomach ties itself in knots. We often feel threatening situations in our stomachs. While the brain ha...

Our brains benefit from exercise just as much as the muscles in our bodies do. It was once believed that loss of brain function was a normal part of the aging process, but it is now believed that exercise enhances the growth and survival of new neurons in the hippocampus — the region of the brain essential for long-term memory, learning and emotions.

HIPPOCAMPUS THE MAP READER OF THE BRAIN
i got a great report from Duke on 6/24/2014 It was great for a several  reasons. No cancer could be found on the MRI and no areas of concern were found by my doctors. Those areas of concern usually turn into cancer,so good news that none were found! Nearly 3 years into this battle and i am just being told that the area of the brain called hippocampus has shown improvement .Up until this point i did not  know i had a problem with my hippocampus The hippocampus among other things helps us with our sense of direction and gives us the ability to learn our way around and get back to the starting point. problems with the hippocampus  can affect   short term memory and long term memory as was shown in the movie 50 first dates. The best that i can tell it was just my sense of direction that was a problem. I am finding my way in and out of places much easier these days and that is a wonderful thing. Nice to know that their was a specific reason for me feeling lost and that it is not just me feeling overwhelmed.

Spent the last few years successfully battling an evil brain cancer called GLIOBLASTOMA I believe i am going to survive this, as of 10/9/2013 i am cancer free.Small speck of cancer found 1/14. with the help of family and friends battling on to get back to being cancer free. Latest MRI shows only one area of concern, will find out more about this on my 6/24/2014 appt at Duke.

Love science related topics  and  enjoy staying busy using software  tools  Gimp,   and Blender.  Huge Fan of NCSU sports! mostly post science related topics with the occasional topic on GLIOBLASTOMA! I am still battling this Brain Cancer 2.5 years from the original diagnosis and surgery.
