Just a reminder - MovieMaker is a free bit of software from Microsoft (thanks Microsoft!), but it does have limits. One of those limits is that it doesn't have layers. This means that we can't do overlays, like having a picture over the top of the video, rather than replacing it completely. I use Techsmith's Camtasia, which is a paid for application. It gives a heap more features too.
Free ones:
WeVideo (limited in Free mode) (https://www.wevideo.com/) - haven't used it, but is a web based tool which provides a few interfaces depeding upon your skill levels. Supports layers.
Lightworks (free version): very feature rich tool. Supports layers and heaps more (https://www.lwks.com/)
VSDC: (http://www.videosoftdev.com/free-video-editor) - supports layers. Never used it, hadn't heard of it before today.

More? http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/test-centre/photo-video/best-free-video-editing-software-2015-uk-3614829/
Look for editors that support layers.

So true. Teachers can no longer consider digital literacy an add-on... It's a core part of a necessary western education. Kids in your class have a computing device that's more powerful than what I used going through IT at Uni.

Let's see how I do this year. Keen for any blogging ideas you have too.
Yep, 2015 is here, and with it comes the opportunity to set some resolutions that I can try - just try - to keep. At this point, let's just focus on the blog... So, here goes (and they're all about...

A full day of heavy use... Still 13% battery left, with a few hours still to go now that battery saver mode has kicked in. Only a short period on the USB in the middle of the day. Not bad, my Nexus, not bad.

General Help  -

Hi - I had thought that photos uploaded under the free 'High Quality' setting would be not downsized (yes - compressed, but resolution left unchanged) if they were 16MP or under.

I've uploaded a fair few photos and noticed that they've been downsized to 2048x1536 (around the 3MP mark) from 4608x3456 (around the 16MP mark).

What's with that? Have I unwittingly made some weird setting choice?

+Chris Ketchell Yep, but they were already jpegs. It's not about them being compressed... the resolution has been dramatically reduced. BTW: 3MP is quite discernibly different from 16MP when photo editing (cropping, using bits etc).

The issue isn't the compression (I run my photos through tinyjpeg.com before using on sites anyway), but the reduction in width x height resolution. They promote 16MP as the max resolution for free, but are downsizing to 3MP. That's a problem.

I'm doing the Ice Bucket Challenge, but with a difference. For every $100 raised, another member of our staff will be getting iced. If you'd like to see more teachers go under the bucket, please support the Motor Neurone Disease Association of Queensland (our name for ALS) by donating at my EveryDayHero account.
Please show your support by giving through COCT gets iced!'s Supporter page and share this link to spread the word about Motor Neurone Disease Association of Queensland Inc. (MND)
