Augmented Reality Concepts from Microsoft Research

Microsoft is not known for its R&D, but their well-funded research division is doing fascinating work in sensor and projector technologies for gesture support and telepresence. This post highlights a few of the most innovative prototypes.

Shared Workspaces

The attached video is a prototype using camera and projector combinations networked to create a collaborative workspace with a very natural form of telepresence. We can directly translate this concept to AR glasses.

Another variation gives a sense of ambient capabilities that can be provided by stationary sensors.

Applied Sciences Group: Interactive Displays: Seeing Displays

There are compelling use cases for rigging "shared workspaces" and "public spaces" with these sensors. They can provide a fixed-view. Then we can use AR glasses as the personal display, with a front-facing camera capturing the first-person view and the data points available to that angle, with the fixed-view sensors filling in the viewing angle gaps to enable accurate sensing of complex gestures, and providing a less wobbly third-person view to project remotely.

3D Interaction

The following demo uses a transparent OLED display that provides the perception of a 3D space that can be manipulated by hands positioned behind the display. Again, we can directly translate this to AR glasses. Imagine that as you watch this video.

Wearable Multitouch Projector

As an adjunct or alternative to glasses, this prototype demonstrates using a projector/sensor combination to create ad-hoc displays on any surface (ala Pranav Mistry), with multitouch gesture support.

There are many potential permutations and applications of these concepts. It defines a large space for ongoing creative exploration and innovation.
