Selling open source projects

I used Express in its early days. I hadn't followed its recent history. Just wow. The MIT-licensed project was sold to a NodeJS startup, which then sold to IBM, which then donated it.

Ownership of an open source project means controlling the central repo. While forks happen, e.g. Hudson/Jenkins, it requires a huge community effort and probably the right kind of individual(s) to lead that effort. Fleetingly rare ... meaning that control of a central repo - no matter how poorly maintained - has real value even if the software is free and legally mutable.
If you’ve used NodeJS at any point during the last 5 years, you’ve most likely used Express as well. But you might not be aware of its stormy history.

I was wondering why TJ or Doug clone the express framework and keeping adding new features since strongloop has no intention to maintain the repo. :/

Yay, CSS variables are shipping in Chrome 49! Great introduction with lots of hands-on examples: bit.ly/21ieWvo.

p.s. "But my CSS preprocessor can" - no, it can't. Read the article! :)
