A: Because we read from top to bottom, left to right.
Q: Why should I start my reply below the quoted text?

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?

A: The lost context.
Q: What makes top-posted replies harder to read than bottom-posted?

A: Yes.
Q: Should I trim down the quoted part of an email to which I'm replying?
»
Top-posting. Top-posting occurs when someone replies to your message by adding reply content to the top of the message that you sent to them, usually leaving your whole message intact at the bottom: From: manager To: you Seventeen. >From: you >To: manager > >How many should we buy?

I had a really bad experience earlier this morning (11/8) around 08:45. I'm new to this neighborhood and visited the store to buy some milk and peanut butter. I was followed all the way to the produce section by an amateur-looking security guard with fake eyelashes, who inelegantly explained that I'd "normally" be asked to leave my bookbag at the front desk (she wouldn't say why I wasn't required today -- perhaps it's some kind of fear tactic, who knows). I'd noticed other people, mostly women, bringing bags into the store as well, and asked why they weren't being asked to do the same. She said that those were "purses" and that they were "different" despite being about the same size (it was a very small bookbag that I brought to carry groceries because I had walked over to the store). She led me to the store manager, and I asked him the same question (why are women allowed to bring bags in, but not men?) -- and he said the same thing, that those were "purses" and that they were "different". I asked him what makes a purse a purse, and he retorted that he wasn't going to debate the matter because he has the right as a retailer to refuse me service. Out of frustration and shock I just walked out rather than quarrel about it, and had to spend $50 at Sprouts just to get the same stuff I would have bought from you. So, I want to complain that this was a horribly offensive way to treat an honest customer who's offering his patronage when there are other grocers to choose from. Worse still, the whole "women's bags are purses and that's different" argument is thinly-veiled sex discrimination, and part of me is seriously considering asking an attorney whether I have a claim arising from this disgusting mistreatment. Even if I don't, or if I do but choose not to pursue it, Fiesta Mart should seriously reconsider whether this is the image they want for their brand -- a store that's so afraid of people stealing apples that it has a security guard (seriously, just how bad does a neighborhood have to be that the GROCERY store has guards!) -- and worse still that their manager and the guard picked this petty battle with me even after speaking with me long enough to realize that I'm a normal guy trying to buy some milk, and not some kind of criminal. If I have to buy a ladies' "purse" just to bring home groceries from this store, I'm not above that -- but wow, it sure will be embarrassing for them when I explain to everyone I meet along the way how their manager forced me into that position!

Deliciously authentic Indian food - way better than Masala Wok! Waitstaff was very helpful since I'm not familiar with the cuisine, and even recommended a cost-saving order conversion to get what I really wanted. Carry-out service was prompt and fresh. I can't wait to dine in next time!

This is actually a distribution center with a small storefront, and not a full retail store. I arrived well after retail hours, but the manager on duty assisted me anyway with a great attitude and personable spirit.
