+Nico Pitney : 16-year-old Joshua on track to becoming youngest African American chess grandmaster in history
There were plenty of signs that 16-year-old Joshua Colas was a chess prodigy. "He told me one day, 'Daddy, I can play you blindfolded,'" his father Guy Colas recounted to The Huffington Post. "And I said, 'You sure? I've never seen yo...

Something I've been experimenting with and researching is building a desktop environment based off of Google's Material Design guidelines.

I've been experimenting with several different layouts, and plan to come up with a design using ideas from Unity, GNOME, elementary, and KDE.

I plan to build it using the QtCompositor APIs, which allow building a Wayland compositor using almost pure QML. Right now this is just a normal QML app, but I plan to turn it into an actual compositor soon.

If anyone is interested in following or contributing to the project, I will be putting code on https://github.com/quartz-os, with my initial work on a Material Design toolkit in QML at https://github.com/quartz-os/qml-material.

Are you familiar with the OS X bluetooth stack, and how to use it from C? Do you crave fame and fortune and an open source project to show off your mad OSX BT skillz in?

If so, you're in luck. The libdivecomputer project needs some help with the OS X bluetooth implementation, because apparently it is completely different from the Linux/Windows ones that already has some preliminary patches.

See the link for details.

Have you ever wanted to turn your +Ubuntu +Linux console into a veritable #Hollywood  technical melodrama hacker interface?  Well, there's now an app for that, built on +Byobu and a bunch of other amazing +OpenSource software in #Ubuntu! :-)  http://j.mp/1wgS4M5
Wargames.  Hackers.  Swordfish.  Superman 3.  Jurassic Park.  GoldenEye.  The Matrix. You've all seen the high stakes hacking scene, packed with techno-babble and dripping in drama.  And the command and control center with do...

"We've lost the sense of what's actually happening in this world that we've made."
We live in a world run by algorithms, computer programs that make decisions or solve problems for us. In this riveting, funny talk, Kevin Slavin shows how modern algorithms determine stock prices, espionage tactics, even the movies you watch. But, he asks: If we depend on complex algorithms to manage our daily decisions — when do we start to lose control?
