Great local coffee shop. Extensive list of teas (I tried the Green Mandarin). The vibe is also what I was looking for- people on their Macs, people reading the newspaper, eclectic things on which to sit, and ambient music.

Respite is one of the quieter coffee shops I've encountered in Durham - which was great for my visit, as I was able to easily find a table and get a good amount of work done (they have free wifi and a variety of different seating). They serve Carrboro Coffee Co. coffee and the cappuccino I ordered was tasty. They also have a wide variety of teas and baked goods available for sale, as well as a lunch menu. I visited in the middle of a weekday and there was no problem finding a spot on Duke street in front of the shop.

If Cocoa Cinnamon is the best place to get coffee in Durham, than Respite is the best place to get tea. They have over 50 different kinds of tea there, including several proprietary blends, and many imported herbals. I've tried their coffee and agree with other reviewers that it's just okay (stiff competition in Durham), but no one in town can meet or beat them in terms of tea selection. Perfect place to stop in on a blustery fall or winter day and grab a hot cuppa' to ward off your threatening cold. Comfy couches, friendly staff, and big windows complete the atmosphere and make it a fun place to hang out and work in with your pot of tea. Good pastries, too. A hidden gem, in this reviewer's opinion.

Thank you - glad you enjoy it!

Respite chose a terrible location. It's right across the street from Parker and Otis, which has much better coffee that is less expensive and has a better selection of products. The coffee isn't terrible, but it's not always warm, let alone hot, and the service could be better.

It's a great place to relax, meet a friend or work. The wi-fi always works great and the baristas are the friendliest around. They have some great drinks, including a lot of blends they make themselves, which are fabulous.

Respite is small, attractive ambience, and has potential. As soon as the baristas become consistent in making mochas I will give them a 4 or maybe even 5 star - I have had 3 mochas over 3 months and they all were consistently different.

150 years ago tomorrow Pres. Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. Days later, the largest surrender of the Civil War happened right here in what came to be called Durham when Conf Gen Johnson and Gen Sherman signed a memorandum. Bennett Place Historic Site, Historic Stagville, and Duke Homestead State Historic Site are commemorating the end of the war/surrender, Washington Duke's walk home, and the freeing of the slaves with lots of events over the next few months.

It's a pretty amazing, we should all check it out and learn about our city and country's past, and how that momentous time 150 years ago impacted us today.

Today is #earthday. We here take that seriously daily; from the green elements in our buildout (recycled glass countertops and laminate in our cabinets), to mostly repurposed after new fabric furniture, and discounts for bringing your own container - as well as computable to go items - it is something we focus on constantly and is part of our mission.

If you did not see it here is a repost from last month highlighting local partnerships and other environmental measures. https://instagram.com/p/0NhMTio3rv/

Did you know that we recycle or compost each day more than we throw out? We partner with Tilthy Rich Compost compost to make sure this happens! We also try to use as many local and/or sustainable vendors of quality as possible including (but not limited to) Carrboro Coffee Roasters, The Mad Popper, The Blakemere Company, Mati Fire Cider , Ninth Street Bakery, maple view farms, Kelley G Cupcakes, Durham coca cola, Humdinger Juice, and fair trade teas from l'age de the Rishi Tea. Taking care of ourselves and our environment matter to us so we try to respect the people who work here and customers as well as the world we live in. Final back basics post, for now.
