After four and a half years in downtown Durham, Respite will be closing down at the end the 25th of June unless something happens to make it earlier.. There are a variety of reasons for this, but essentially it boils down to energy. The lease was up, and after evaluating the proposed increase and the struggle with the building, I decided my best option was to move or let it go. I do not have the desire to create a new space, rebrand, rebuild, regrow a customer community and otherwise restart (but someone from here does, please read to the end of this epistle to find out more).

I cannot tell you how proud I am for what we have created from day one at Respite. We have an unparalleled team who support each other, and genuinely like each other and our customers. We have local vendors of excellence and it has been a joy to see some of them grow from nothing to something. I am proud to consider them friends. Most importantly, we have amazing and loyal customers. When I was asked what I wanted prior to opening Respite, I mentioned I wanted to create a space for the community, and with the help of everyone who has worked here, we did. This year we were even nominated by you all as the best coffee shop in Durham an honor we are thrilled about as it shows your love of our efforts.

It has been a gift to get to know many people from all walks of life in Durham and see some of you daily. Many of you have become a part of the fabric of our lives. We have see you all befriend each other, bond, and create a living and breathing entity formed upon your connections to us, each other, and the space. It has become what I hoped it would be, and how many people get to say that about their dreams?

Just now as I write the first draft of this, two great examples of what I love about this community and Durham helped to brighten a day filled with this missive, payroll and taxes. First, my Fed-ex guy drove by and smiled and waved. I have had the same fed ex man at home or business since graduating Duke Law in 2007. He knows me, where I live and where I work. If I have a package that must be signed for, he has been known to stop by Respite to see if he can deliver it. Once during build-out, he asked where I was and showed up with a deeply needed package at Fishmongers (RIP) over a lunch meeting. This is the kind of thing that only happens in a place like Durham. Secondly, a customer who used to come in daily but left for education came in. Ali, of course, remembered his name and congratulated him on graduating, he replied that he had to come visit us while down seeing family.

These are but small examples of what happens daily here. As I write, I know by sight at least almost everyone in the space (this is our regulars’ only period it seems, though that honestly could be said of many periods of the day). We have seen and been a part of so many lives here, met your families, seen them grow from nothing to toddlers. We have seen freshman graduate and been entertained by the “old men's club,” who congregate to cast judgement on parking and discuss the world (Thank you to Tony the artist, Larry the writer with Buster, and of course Barrett). Words alone can not express the gratitude for allowing this to happen.

At the same time I am ready and excited to see what is next for me. If you love Respite, as I do, please please please support Ali, who was twice nominated as best barista in Durham. She is working towards taking this community she has been so integral in creating, and moving it to a business and dream of her own. You can learn more and support her as she makes hervision come to life here: www.aliklinn.com and at facebook.com/aliklinn.

This has been an amazing adventure. Thank you all, Courtney

Quick psa from@#garyandguster and Oswald. Due to the continued leakage last night and the amount of exposed fiberglass, we will be closed tomorrow (Good Friday). We are hopeful to be open Saturday and will keep you all posted.

Right now the NC primary is on March 15. Current law states you must register 25 days before the election if you are not already a registered voter* meaning you must register soon. (Feb 19)

At Respite, we honor the right to vote and voters in multiple ways, including discounts for those who walk in with an I voted sticker on Election Day, and posting updates on our board on what our current law deems acceptable forms of id. We do this because we believe that whatever your political persuasion, an informed and engaged populace is good for a civil society. We also believe that all elections matter and have consequences, simply put voting gives you a voice and if you don't vote it's hard to complain.

So get involved, register, read the news, make an informed decision, and exercise your rights.

*The current election laws and even the primary dates are under review in the courts. The congressional house district may be redrawn in the next few weeks, (especially as a 4-4 split at the Supreme Court (scouts) means the lower court ruling holds). There is a limited right to same day registration when voting early but this may change at any time as it issued under court order and is subject to review so, therefore, best practice suggests registering by the 19th in case SCOTUS rules soon. The id law is under review at the federal district level currently.
