There's more to the current media outrage among better-off South Africans than a sudden love for all things democratic and fiscally prudent. If you scratch the surface it immediately becomes clear that the only rights they really care about are their own. If the current anti-Zuma groundswell is to have any impact it will need the support of the 'other' South Africa - the marginalised in townships and rural areas who have been stripped of their economic rights and voices in mainstream media. The question is if there's any perceived incentive for them to do so when most privileged South Africans couldn't care less when 17 million rural South Africans were threatened with further disenfranchisement through the Traditional Courts Bill. It's one thing to threaten court action and civil disobedience when you see your tax money passing into the grubby little hands of a Malusi Gigaba, but something completely different when you stand up for someone else without personal gain in mind. Bitter fruit indeed ...

While South Africa's chattering classes obsess about the impending Zupta-geddon that the ANC's cronyism and lack of accountability have unleashed upon the country, there is a far bigger storm brewing - one that has been lingering in the shadows for far too long.

An important article in which we challenge the transparency, integrity and impact of lobby groups that are backed by big corporate interests, and who masquerade as benevolent non-profit organisations.

Turkish director, Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s latest film, Winter Sleep, is a ponderous affair set in the snow-covered highlands of Cappadocia. Long intense conversations brought on by the forced isolation of winter expose the tensions between social classes and within a marriage.
