"If I were only allowed 10 pieces of photographic gear, what would they be?"

That's the question posed this weekend by one of my readers, and I answered it in detail (cutting my own gear down to 10 pieces, but also coming up with a "buy it all from scratch budget version), at this link:
…that was a question posted on my Facebook page by Are Knudsen, a photographer from Norway. Why the question? Well, I kicked off a new monthly Q&A column in Shutterbug magazine a few months ago (they named it “Ask a Pro”), but essentially I answer questions posed by Shutterbug's readers along ...

Should I buy a 60D or a 7D?
Hi all! I'm thinking over months now, if it would be necessary to buy a 7D or if a 60D is "enough"?
I have right now a 300D (aka Digital Rebel / aka Digital Kiss), which I've been using since 2003. Now I feel to make my next step, because I'm more interested in photographing before and I want to do it in a semiprofessional way (not only for my private fun). Following are the things I (already) have, not quite more than the kit I bought back in 2003...

Camera: Canon EOS 300D (Digital Rebel/Digital Kiss)
Lenses: Canon EF-S 18-55 mm 1:3.5-5.6 / Canon EF 90-300 mm 1:4.5-5.6 and Canon EF 50 mm 1:1.8 II
more: Cable Release, Manfrotto Tripod (don't have it here, but it is a pretty stable one...), sever CF-Cards and Batteries.

As I want to be a little safe for future, as far as this can be, I wana figure out, if the differences between the 60D and the 7D are so much important to me, a step to more quality is both of them to me! :-)

As far as I could find out, the main differences are
EOS 7D: more speed for continuous shooting (8 frames/sec), the 19 cross-type AF points and the TTL flash sync

My question is now, how far does the difference between EOS 60D's 9 cross-type AF points and EOS 7D's 19 effect the pictures and it's quality? Maybe someone here owns both cameras as well and can do some pictures that are showing the same to compare the focussing qualities and the picture quality with same lenses??

I hope someone can help me with my question, and if there is any more information needed, feel free to ask!!

Thank you very, very much!

Did you make your decision yet? Otherwise, my short advice would be keep the 300D and get better lenses and some basic lighting equipment. Longer advice available if you want it.

One of my biggest fears came into reality yesterday.

My camera bag, full of almost everything I own has been stolen. (except for a 200€ flashgun I accidentally left at home).

It all happened while I was having lunch, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon in a small bar in the city center of Milan. My backpack was between my chair (which I never left) and a solid concrete wall; I still can’t believe they succeeded in taking that cumbersome 10+kg backpack without me even noticing.
Side note – just to give you a smile: I was drinking still water at the time.

It’s pretty hard to get insured if you’re not a professional here in Italy, so no chance of getting ANY money back.

Just below my personal information you will find a list of the stolen items; some are definitely uncommon like my infra red converted 5D MKII (their are not many 5d Mark II custom converted for infrared around), so please keep an eye on them.

Still extremely sick about it, those of you who know me personally are aware that Photography is my life, and losing all this hard earned gear has created a deep big black hole inside me. I started building this system at the beginning of 2008, which means five years of effort have been cancelled in a few seconds.

I’m trying to react, and will immediately start to build a new camera system – I can’t think of my life without Photography – fully aware of the fact that some ***** can take away my gear, but they WON’T TAKE AWAY MY TALENT, PASSION and DEDICATION, which is all that matters.

Help me by sharing this as much as you can.

Here’s the list of the material which has been stolen.

EF 50 f/1.4 – sn: 33906527

EF 17-40 f/4 – sn: 01151166

TS-E 24 f/3.5 – sn: not available – I bought it used and don’t have the box.

Thank you.
