The Jonestown Cult Massacre (This day in 1978) Remembered

37 years ago 900+ people died in a murder-suicide massacre orchestrated by their cult leader, Jim Jones.

Jones, an abusive huckster, had moved his followers to Guyana out of fear after reporters had begun investigating his 'Peoples Temple' over allegations of abuse and intimidation:

Has Ebola scared away the faith healers?

Faith healers, who claim that God has anointed them to heal the sick and — in some cases — to raise the dead as well, have been notably absent lately. Are they scared of Ebola?

Murder confession followed IHOP church’s ‘exorcism session’

Micah Moore’s confession to the murder of Bethany Deaton — the wife of his spiritual leader Tyler Deaton — came after an ‘International House of Prayer’ group exorcism session , his attorneys claim.

In a motion to dismiss Moore’s confession they argue that according to the admission of detectives there is no evidence that Bethany’s death was anything other than a suicide.”

Background to the Scientology v. Russia European Court of Human Rights case

Earlier this month the European Court for Human Rights ruled in favor of the 'Church' of Scientology in a case regarding the refusal of authorities in St. Petersburg, Russia to officially recognize it as a legal entity.

This item provides some background to that case:
http://ukhumanrightsblog.com/2014/10/05/another-strasbourg-judgment-which-putin-may-wish-to-ignore-scientologists-win/

The Scientology cult, which by all accounts[1] is dwindling just about everywhere in the world, has always been skilled at using (and abusing) the legal system against its critics.

That a 'church' known for its human rights abuses[2] not just claims to promote human rights, but also gets human rights organizations to support its cases is hard to see.

Fortunately, over the past few years this destructive cult has seen a constant flow of members -- including many top officials -- leaving its clutches.

One of the best resources on the ongoing problems the 'Church' of Scientology faces is Tony Ortega's website, the Underground Bunker[3]

[1] Not 'all' accounts.  Scientology itself claims that it is experiencing tremendous growth.

'No need for Muslims primary school teachers to wear full face veil'

Telegraph

Muslim primary school teachers should not be encouraged to wear the full-face veil in class, one of Britain's leading Islamic scholars has insisted.

Dr Sheikh Hojjat Ramzy welcomed remarks by the former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Williams that fears about the increasing use of the niqab in Britain are 'misplaced' but said young children nevertheless need to see their teachers' facial expressions.

Santa Muerte (Holy Death)... and plagiarism

At Religion News Blog's Twitter stream [1] we recently posted a link to a short article -- Originally published in the October 2014 edition of British GQ -- about Santa Muerte [2].

But Dr. Andrew Chesnut reports [3] that much of the material in the GQ article is plagiarized from his book, Devoted to Death: Santa Muerte, the Skeleton Saint [4]

Dr. R. Andrew Chesnut, an internationally recognized expert on Latin American religious history, has spent many years researching Santa Muerte and the cult that surrounds the skeletal saint.

Watch a video presentation in which Dr. Chesnut discusses his book.
